In the Civil War

He was the Chaplain of the 25th Indiana Infantry

Missouri, 2nd Unit into Ft Donelson, pulled wounded off of the battlefield and was in the thick of battle at Shiloh down through Grant's Miss. campaign and back up through Atlanta.

6. My response to a conservative friend

She had told me that it was unpatriotic to speak against the war in Iraq. I told her that my ancestors had fought in every war this country has had just so I could speak my mind.

Used that a few more times since then.

very few people take the time to think in terms of generations. And, although there is an upsurge in interest in "family trees," the majority of those folks are looking for some type of "royalty." I'm glad to see someone who has a pride in (and knowledge of) ancestors who fought for truth and democracy and freedom .... I'm very impressed. Posts like this are so interesting, and so encouraging. Thank you for sharing this very important information!

15. I published a book on the Irish stone-cutters on the canals

and railroads of the northeast a while back. I included information on my own family. About 15 years ago, I got a letter, obviosly from an elderly man, who had seen me on tv a few times. He said I reminded him of his uncle and cousin, who had the same name. Long story short, he was my grandfather's cousin. Grandpa was born in Ireland in the 1870s. This gentleman's mother had been the family historian; she gave him the family bible from Ireland, complete with "tin-types," letters, documents, etc. He was in his 90s, and wanted to pass them on. I was honored that he gave them to me.

Being a family historian is a great responsibility. Should you want to publish -- even in limited numbers -- let me know, and I'll tell you the best bet in the country. Highest quality, lowest prices.

I will contact you soon private mail regarding this so as to pass along the info. which may very well be helpful to him.

Preserving our history and ancestory is extremely important for future generations.

Unfortunately there are a couple of other sides of the family where roadblocks have been hit. But always searching

with the battle descriptions

Shiloh in part 2 still needs work as there is more in the journal not yet transcribed

Add Corinth and other Miss, Ala, Georgia details that have not yet been added.

But, how did Lincoln inherit the Civil War?

There was no war before Lincoln took office. There was a secession.

19. If I can speak for the poster, I think he meant Lincoln inherited the crop

of war that had been sown by Buchanan's pro-slaveholder sympathies (such as his complicity in their crime against Kansas) and his refusal or inability to do anything to quell Secession.

that if Buchanon would have had a second term, there would have been no Civil War, just a peaceful secession.

Where that would have led is open to incredible speculation.

I've heard everything from a quick reunification to a German victory in World War I.

18. my g-grandfather was in the 11th IA and fought at Shiloh

His ancestors came from Germany to PA (one fought in the Revolutionary War) and then to VA; some of his relatives stayed in VA and fought on the confed side.
