If Bush loses who will become the defacto leader of the GOP?
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 06:55 PM by wuushew
(In the public's eyes anyway).

I really don't see him being deified as was Saint Raygun. Some combination of Hoover and Nixon seem likely. Both men where not in the political limelight following their retirements.

7. Who would you suggest?
I think it's McCain, maybe Frist or Hagel.

16. Hagel a good choice - he has already announced for the
Presidency in 2008. Frist has screwed everything he has touched - way too stupid even for them.

45. An interesting tidbit on Hagel
from Ronnie Dugger at The Nation. The tradition continues?

"John Gottschalk, publisher of the World-Herald, recruited Chuck Hagel into American Information Systems (AIS), an Omaha-based vote-counting company. Hagel worked there five years, eventually becoming CEO and part owner. In 1995 Hagel resigned to run for the Senate from Nebraska, where AIS would be counting the votes in his election contest. A Gallup/World-Herald poll the Sunday before the voting showed Hagel and his Democratic opponent in a 47-47 dead heat. Hagel won two days later by a fourteen-point spread. Easily re-elected in 2002, Hagel is a likely GOP candidate for President in 2008."

29. Let's hope that holds true for Jeb.
If the Florida Dems can rally and kick his ass out of the governorship in 2006, he'll be in a very weak position to run for the presidency in 2008. But regardless of Jeb's political fortunes, hopefully the American people will have had enough of the family Bush for all time, after George.

22. I agree
Whoever it is I think Novak is right, there Will be a massive split in the GOP after the election. Once they get their ass handed to them on a platter they are going to go through a period of blaming each other for the loss and the extreme christian conservatives will be shown the door.

9. there will be a huge powerplay
between Frist, DeLay, and Santorum. DeLay will go to jail, thereby knocking him out of the race. Expect some serious infighting among the two factions.

Hand me the popcorn and enjoy the show.

17. My money's riding on Santorum....
He fits the repub rw profile perfectly; add to that, I don't think even the repubs think Frist has done a good job as Senate majority leader--nothing has passed, legislation deliberately brought up to embarrass dems has backfired on him and he is totally ineffective at reaching across the aisle to get anything done. Even Trent Lott got things done.

their party will collapse in an epic battle between moderates and (true)conservatives on one side and the religious right and the neocons on the other.

If Bush loses close, I think there will be another candidate coming out of the right wing to hold the GOP. But if Kerry pulls away, look out, that means it is going to have a huge battle, and there's every possibility of a paleocon gaining the party reins. I can't imagine Frist getting much support nationwide. He has the personality of an iguana, and he represents the only special interest hated more than lawyers.

He'd be right at home there, wouldn't he?
There must be dozens of Henry Potters clawing their way to the top of that shitpile of a Party.

Actually, I think the implosion is already underway. The Republican Party has seeded their own demise by bedding the RW fundies and Neo-con fascists. They've demanded absolute obedience to Bush and no one is allowed to express any thoughts that are not approved by Chairman W. We heard the 1st retiring moderate Republican speak his mind today, about the folly of unilateral invasion of Iraq....and he was quickly torn apart by the rabid right for that transgression.

I am so going to enjoy their immeninent destruction.
