EFFORT TO FINALIZE INTERIM AGREEMENT TO BEGIN WEDNESDAY
The final stage of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations on the
Interim Agreement will begin Wednesday in Florence, Italy,
HA'ARETZ reported.
Foreign Ministry Director-General Uri Savir will meet today
with Palestinian Delegation Head Abu Alla to coordinate a final
schedule for the talks.
Delegations comprised of approximately 70 members, which
include experts from all fields, will work on the fine points of
the agreements. The Israeli delegation will be comprised
primarily of IDF officers.
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin will hold discussions today with
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and members of the delegation in
preparation for their departure.
ROSS ARRIVES IN ISRAEL TO PREPARE FOR NEXT ROUND OF ISRAELI-
SYRIAN TALKS
Dennis Ross, U.S. Special Coordinator for Middle East Affairs,
will arrive in Jerusalem today to lay the groundwork for the
continuation of Israeli-Syrian military talks scheduled to take
place later this month, DAVAR reported.
Ross will meet with Prime Minster Yitzhak Rabin and IDF Chief
of Staff Lt. Gen. Amnon Shahak. Afterward, Ross will also hold
talks with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.
While in Syria, Ross will meet with President Hafez al-Assad,
Chief of Staff Hikmat Shihabi and other Syrian officials.
During his stay, Ross will attempt to bridge gaps from the last
round of talks between Shahak and Shihabi. Ross will also work
on a schedule for the next round of negotiations.
In addition to the military talks, negotiations will resume
shortly between Israel's Ambassador the U.S. Prof. Itamar
Rabinovich and Syria's Ambassador to the U.S. Walid Mualem. The
sides are expected to discuss the substance of normalization of
relations, a schedule for an Israeli withdrawal in the Golan
Heights, and a border for withdrawal.
According to DAVAR, American officials said that if Israeli and
Syrian officials make substantial progress, U.S. Secretary of
State Warren Christopher will travel to the Middle East during
mid-August.
TENSION ON LEBANESE BORDER CONTINUES WITH NEW KATUYSHA ATTACKS
Hizbullah launched two rounds of Katuysha rockets at northern
Israel Sunday afternoon, HA'ARETZ reported. There were no
reports of injuries or property damage.
Residents of the Galilee spent Saturday and Sunday nights in
bomb shelters as a result of the latest tension in the north.
The Hizbullah announced that it will continue to target
settlements in the northern Galilee.
The newspaper reported that talks this evening between Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Dennis Ross, U.S. Special Coordinator
for Middle East Affairs, will focus on improving the
understandings reached following Operation Accountability.
According to the newspaper, Rabin will tell Ross that there are
too many gray areas regarding norms for military activity in
southern Lebanon, and that this lack of clarity should be reduced
as much as possible.
A senior military official said that Israel has several ideas
for improving the understandings.
SYRIANS, IRANIANS DISCUSS HIZBULLAH'S FUTURE FOLLOWING ACCORD
WITH ISRAEL
Syrian and Iranian officials in Tehran discussed the future of
the Hizbullah in Lebanon following a peace deal between Israel
and Damascus, HA'ARETZ reported.
During the talks, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk a-Shara and
Syrian Vice President Abed el-Halim Haddam told the Iranians that
Syrian support of the Hizbullah is neither absolute nor
automatic, and that its continuation depends on progress with
Israel.
Syrian leaders said their support of Hizbullah will end when an
accord with Israel is reached.
The Iranians expressed concern about the Syrian position on the
future of the Hizbullah, and said they disagree with, but
respect, Syria's negotiations with Israel.
PERES TO DEPART ON WEDNESDAY FOR EUROPEAN MEETING ON SECURITY
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres will travel to Vienna Wednesday
for a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe, Israel Radio, KOL YISRAEL, reported.
Peres is expected to meet with the foreign ministers of
Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Egypt.
According to DAVAR, Peres will also visit Germany and France.
In Germany, Peres will meet with German Foreign Minister Klaus
Kinkel, who will report on discussions held last week with Syrian
President Hafez al-Assad.
Today's Israel Line was prepared by Golan Cipel and Joshua
Mitnick at the Consulate General of Israel in New York.
