NSW Premier Bob Carr told his Planning Minister Diane Beamer he "didn't give a shit" about jobs lost by the closure of the Orange Grove factory outlet, an inquiry was told today. The upper house inquiry into the south-west Sydney centre was told by owner Nabil Gazal that Fairfield MP Joe Tripodi had relayed the exchange to him after speaking with Ms Beamer.Mr Gazal said Mr Tripodi told him that the Premier had intervened on behalf of his "friend" Frank Lowy because the Westfield boss did not want competition from the Orange Grove centre.
Mr Carr was warned of hundreds of potential job losses but apparently did not care, Mr Gazal said."He (Mr Tripodi) said Mrs Beamer told him the Premier said that he doesn't give a s..t about the jobs in Liverpool – he owns the joint," he told the inquiry. The last reference was taken to mean that Liverpool was such a safe Labor area that it didn't matter what the party did.

The move puts about 450 jobs at risk.
The inquiry continues this afternoon.
