Mastectomy Legistation I WANT EVERYONE TO SEE THIS
There is a bill called The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act, sponsored bt Rose De Lauro (sp?) which will require insurance companies tocover a minimium of 48 hour hspital stay for mastectomy patients It is about eliminating "drive through " mastectomies where women are sent home against their DR wishes still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes even with drainage tubes still in place

This happened to a friend of mine , and she suffered so....

There is a petition at

Lifetimetv.com

to be presented to Ms De Lauro (sp?) Please sign it , do your part

On behalf of my friend Michelle, I thank you

My mother chose to have a radical mastectomy in her late seventies. My aunt did the same just one year earlier. They did survive, but were allowed to stay in the hospital due to their ages.

Having witnessed first hand the severity of this operation, I can not imagine how our current insurance-controled health care system can rationalize turning women out to the streets after such a life altering and dangerous operation.

JitterbugPerfume, thank you for bringing this to our attention and AnnabelLee, thank you for providing the link where we all can do something positive.

12. thank you for letting us know.
Petition signed and a personal message added.

I am shocked and absolutely furious that anyone would think a woman could go through this major surgery and spend less than 48 hours in the hospital recovering. I'd sure like to see anyone in a decision making position on this go through it and then be told they can't be in the hospital any longer because the insurance won't cover it.

I spent FIVE days recovering in hospital after my mastectomy. FIVE. and Even Then they wanted me to leave the drain tubes in when I went home. (couldn't do it. knew I couldn't handle it, so they removed them.)

Damn insurance companies. :grr:

and JitterbugPerfume- I'm so sorry your friend Michelle was abused this way. That's exactly what it is - abuse. I cannot begin to even imagine having to leave the hospital that soon, or what she went through without that very necessary after-surgery care.

I hope she's doing well, give her a hug for me, would you?

My grandmother is 84 and recently underwent this procedure. Her age is the only reason they kept her more than a day. Even then, she was home too quickly, tubes and all.

All women, of all ages and backgrounds, deserve REAL health care, especially for the most serious of illnesses.

36. The sooner we get insurance jerks out of the medical practise
the better off we will be. My Doc always tells the insurance jerks, "And when can you see this patient? He/She is in room xxx in the xxx Hospital. His/her care is totally in your hands now and I will testify on their behalf should you fail to administer proper healthcare advice." I hear your call, JBP, and you can bet I will do my best to expose and correct this. Thanks for the heads up. I've been fighting for this since the early 70's. It's time we got it resolved.

He sounds like one in a million.

By the way, they have been trying to put this reform through for years now. I know the effort started during the Clinton administration, so that gives you an idea of how much of an uphill climb it's been.

Also, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT)is a cancer survivor herself. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer but seems to have made it into remission and has stayed there for years.

I think we need to remember, though, that 'drive-throughs' like so many other, similar things --big military budgets, no safety net, no unions-- are in place because they're good for business and the elites, not because they're good for us.

And when we vote for so-called 'moderate', pro-business candidates, we are voting to continue these harmful policies. We are voting against our own interests. We are voting to have fewer rights, poorer health, more poverty, and fewer options.

Petitions like this mean nothing compared to our votes. Petitions whisper 'oh please don't'. Only our votes can say 'stop!'.

For the Goddess's sake and our own, let's be clear about what our choices really mean.

BUT my advice to everyone, for whatever reason you've been admitted to a hospital, get the heck out of there as fast as you can. Hospitals are not healthy places to be. There are shortages of nurses in many of them. Hospitals are the BEST places to aquire infections.

A friend recently had a hysterectomy, at age 28, and came home from the hospital with bed sores!!!! Evidently, she was in a lot of pain and was given lots of pain meds. No one made sure she was turned over regularly. The hysterectomy has healed. The bed sores are still healing a month later and still causing misery.
