I just threw a pest control salesman out of my house (a Tom Delay clone)
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 10:44 AM by Mika
I need to get my house termite tented (I'm in Florida), so I made an appointment with a Truly Nolen agent.

He showed up for the appointment this morning wearing a "One nation under God" lapel pin on one lapel, a Jesus Saves on the other, AND a 9-11-01 pocket pin. Ok. No big deal at first, he's entitled to believe what he wants and wear it on his sleeve if he wants to.

After we go over the measurements of my house, costs, etc., he sits down to fill out the paperwork. TV is on MSGOP & dimson is somewhere on videotape. He tells me that "he's a presbyterian, and that Bush is the best thing to come along. God sent him to save us". Then he asks my s/o and me if we are jewish. No, we're not. Then out of the blue this man goes on a tirade about how ALL muslims seek only to kill all of us, Gore would be helping them if he were prez, Sharon should wipe out Palestine, Bush is Gods man. All muslims hate us and should wiped out. This is a holy war and we, as a christian nation, will lead the way."

AT that point I said "enough already, GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! You should be ashamed of yourself for coming into peoples homes calling yourself a devout man and then spreading such hatred and lies, and I understand why you like Bush - because he hates freedom but loves lies the same as you. GET OUT!!!!".

Unfreakingbelievable!

Now that I'm a little less enraged, I'm looking for another termite control company.

7. I could barely contain myself
I wanted to curse this man out while he walked to his car, but I slammed my front door behind him yelling "shame shame shame on you". I rarely get as mad as I became at this man. Malloy's show on the Swift Boat lying scum got me very angry last night, and I just don't want to hear more lying scum today.

hire Orkin! My Mom and a ton of other people have had a boatload of trouble with them down there.

I always hired a local exterminator when I lived in Florida. Ask around and find a good local company. Keep the money in the community and away from large companies that donate to Republicans. (They all do in Florida)

A Tom Delay wannabe first thing in the morning :scared: that would ruin my day too!

3. I think you owe it to the company to let them know their agent
cost them your business. He went way over a business agent/client line and you were correct to say you didn't want to do business with him. An employer should know when such a line is crossed.

32. Asking your race or ethnicity is illegal for salespeople
It is illegal for salespeople to discuss race or ethnicity on sales calls, I think. There is probably not a specific ordinance, but I'm sure there must be other laws that would get them. Similar to red-lining when it comes to real-estate and african-Americans, which has been outlawed in a number of ways.

You must tell them what this guy said and did, how he had the NERVE to ask you what your religion was, and how he spouted all this political crap that not only offended you, but has not alienated you from the company he was supposedly representing. MAKE SURE YOU STRESS TO THEM that they have LOST your business because of this guy and what he's done. You might also add a question about whether this guy was spouting a company-endorsed line. They need to realize that this wrong-wing crap has COST THEM A CUSTOMER. You MUST DO THIS!!! This kind of SHIT can't be tolerated. Not for one instant!

4. Another one
I'm working as a treasurer for a county (FL) race and had to buy campaign contribution software thats from a state-approved vendor.

When the software arrived, it not only had the CD, but a bunch of Jezzus literature, and a "get out of hell free" card. I'm waiting until after the election to give them a piece of my mind, as I don't want to hurt my candidate.

9. I usually try to engage them
I really don't mind if people express some political inclination as long as they are willing to interact in a reasonable way (especially if they are fellow Dems). Talking politics or religion sanely is OK by me, and I know how to steer conversations away from the hot buttons. But this was waaaayyyy over the line. Pure hate! I don't want it near me.

8. What is it with Florida and proseletyzing whackoes
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 10:45 AM by LibertyChick
who come into your house on business?

My FL story:

Our carpet cleaner guy comes into the house, starts cleaning the rug, and then sez, "Can I ask you a personal question?"

Dumb me says yes, thinking it will be something about the carpet.

No. He goes on trying to convince us to go to his Fundie church, yadda yadda. So, I quickly say, "I'm Catholic", thinking that will shut him up. (I was raised Catholic, nonpracticing atheist now)

No luck. He then says, "I used to be Catholic, now I am a Christian."

Anyway, we scared the crap out of him finally, by my SO getting down two bibles he keeps in the closet (he is into history) and points out that, if what the carpet guy was saying was true, then the King James' Version of the bible was wrong, since books were taken out over time for political reasons.

That shut him up fast. He seemed panicked, like, 'how do I answer THAT?' He got his carpet crap together and booked asap, and we laughed.

I think this must be some new way of getting into your house and home in order to "convert" you...come in as a tradesperson, then get to work swaying the hearts and minds of the non-converted.

I only wish I had thought to say to him, "No, I'm a Satanist" to watch what would happen.

13. Well, I did not become an atheist because I was Catholic
There were many other factors that converged in my decision.

I know many liberal Catholics.

I thought it was funny that this nut would actually say that he used to be Catholic, and now is a Christian, whatever the hell that means.

What happened to the good old days when one just practiced one's religion among many different people and did not wear it on their sleeves is what I want to know?

74. We have a lot of that here
We even have the "Christian Car Company," a used car lot. They like to say in their ads that the Bible is their sales manual. All it does is make me laugh: how can a car be a Christian with no immortal soul? what about the verses telling us to sell all we have and give to the poor--what a great sales technique! last time I checked, the Bible doesn't even mention cars!

I get sick of that too. Jesus is not for sale and shouldn't be used to profit off of his followers. He only got seriously angry in public once, and that was at the moneychangers in the Temple making money off of the faithful. Those businesses should be careful of judgement.

Some of the fundies in one of my dental study groups tried to start an invocation prayer at the bimonthly meetings. I loudly objected, and to my suprise about a dozen other DDSs agreed with me. We threatened to leave the group and recoup our dues if they pushed this any further. No invocation. These fundies created a divisive wedge within our implantology study group, and its not fun any more. Man, I hate what they are doing to our country.

22. One guy who wanted organized prayer at my last job
went on and on about freedom to pray, and how they have the right to pray...so, I finally asked him in a nonthreatening manner (and I can be a bitch on wheels when I want to be):

"Who is stopping you from praying? You can pray all day to God and no one will stop you."

That brought him to a screech!!!!!!!ing stop.

Apparently, Rushbo (or one of the RW-bots who play this type of person like a violin) was spreading the disinformation that the ACLU was trying to stop prayers in schools, as well.

I said,'how would the ACLU know if you are praying to God if you are doing it quietly?'

Then I asked him about non-Christian prayers in public schools. Would he support that? Well, no.

So, I said that that is the problem with organized prayer, whether in a school, or at a meeting, or whatever. And, that if he so felt the need, he could pray and pray and pray, and no one would even know if he did it silently. So, why did he need to do it out loud, like Pharisees?

Heh, heh.

47. Lotsa fundies don't consider Catholics to be
true Christians. (I once saw a web site referring to the Catholic church as the whore of Babylon.) The reasoning has something to do with Catholics not being saved, supposed idolatry (because of all the statues), the veneration of saints and Mary, and so on... I once saw a huge list of doctrines that supposedly made the Catholic church non-Christian but I don't remember most of it.

Doesn't matter if you don't want to hear it or not: if you've been witnessed to, according to them, and you ignore the message, then because you've been told and rejected it, you're going to hell. They've done their duty--they're trying to win their 'soul-winner's crown' which they get once they've died and gone to heaven.

Well, maybe not, but still, this is very creepy.

Here's my story:

A month ago, two guys buzz my apartment. I went downstairs and opened the door to find two young guys with leather-bound Bibles. "Hello," one of them said, "Do you believe that evil is winning in the world?"

"Yes!" said. "He's up in the polls, isn't he?" I then started laughing maniacally and shut the door.

Twits.

The great loser in all of this for all who believe in a Higher Power named Jesus is none other than Jesus himself. How sad. I am a Catholic. I believe in Jesus but these days I cringer whenever I hear the name Jesus. It is like I don't want to hear it, yet Jesus is not the one whom I am rejecting... it is all of the misguided, heretical use of his name. that was across the street from work, worked in a place that sells glasses where the owners had been really nice about fixing glasses theat they didn't sell. She just joined them, she had "Jesus" stuff all over her examining room, which was fine, but then she complemented me on having my daughter, who goes to a Catholic School, attend "a good Christian School where students can pray in the classroom." It felt funny, I do send her to the school because it is Catholic but we strongly support no prayer in public class rooms. I never went back.

me about any type of health care professional at all (doctor, dentist, optometrist, etc.) who claim to be Christian but who never even consider giving pro bono care to those who desperately need it but cannot afford it, especially children, and I've often found that those doctors who claim to be Christian are the ones with the most ruthlessly aggressive collection agencies who won't let even a very small bill go. As a Christian myself, that makes me almost physically ill. Some of them even have "WWJD" stuff everywhere, the hypocrites!

I had just gotten a cup of coffee, was still in my robe and my husband was still asleep. Not only did they ring the bell - the guy started knocking loudly on the door as soon as he rang the bell. What a royal piss off! Our doorbell is a chime located on the enclosed porch, so it's audible to anyone ringing it.

I asked him what he wanted and stopped him in mid sentence when he said he and his family were going around talking to people about reading the bible. Grrrrr.... Frankly, I wanted to say "Read this" and give him the finger. But he had his wife and kid with him.

34. Please Please Please - Always tell the OWNER of the franchise or
company that you're hiring when this happens, and that they've lost your business because of this.

Sometimes, the "managers" support this kind of nonsense...but they get paychecks just like the rest of the folks. It's the OWNER of the franchise, or the business, that will take it in the shorts when business falls off due to political or religious proselytizing. If the owner supports this stuff, that's his/her decision whether it's worth losing business over; but don't just complain to "management".

If enough of us do this, we'll be sending out a $strong me$$age that WE'RE HERE, AND WE SPEND MONEY!!! Since that seems to be what most of them care about anyway.

40. Good point. Liberals are always too timid about raising a stink.
This is why the fanatics are running the show: we are too tolerant of people who abuse our good nature. We need fight back. These freaks have declared all-out war on us. Respond in kind.

41. I raised a stink. Loudly.
When I get a follow-up call from Nolen, they'll hear about it. If more people would just throw the intransigent idiots out and not do business with them, the business owners/managers will get the point.

37. What is it with these people?
Can't they just shut the hell up and do their jobs? When they come into YOUR home, they should leave their political and religious views at the front door.
We have a co-worker that was told if he didn't stop trying to recruit the rest of us into going to his wacko fundie church, he would be fired. Unfortunately, I got stuck on jury duty with him one time, so he tried to recruit me outside the courthouse. Technically, he wasn't recruiting at work, so I just let it slide.

38. Good for you...
I once had a wash machine repairman talk about the 'immigrants' being the problem here in the US...

If the laundry hadn't been piling up..but I probably should have thrown him out like you did. Thanks for telling us your story.

44. OMG
"I once had a wash machine repairman talk about the 'immigrants' being the problem here in the US..."

That's what the Native American Indians say. ;-)

I've yet to have anyone come to my home and say that to me (probably because, in Miami, most service people are immigrants).

I could never have done that. But I would have wanted to. I commend your strength. Well done.

Edit- I wanted to say that I normally feel sorry for people like that. But we have had enough! And we can blame this anger on one group of people who are represented by BUSH and Limbaugh. I really don't know if the times are achangin', or moving toward civil war. I really hope these people are more willing to change, than fight. Because we are ready to fight.

50. A nutty story from our house
I wanted to bred my doggie and finally found a nice stud for her. SO, while the lady of the male and I are chatting on the phone she has to ask me If I was Christian? I said nothing, not-a. When I went over to her home to make the "play" date I noticed they had fox TV on and a giant picture of Jesus who's eyes followed you room to room. Never the less, "it" didn't take and my female dog probably got spooked at the environment.

I contacted the lady who gave me the info on the stud dog. I told her all I wanted was to get my dog F*&*ed, not listen to a damn sermon.

No heroics by me.

I am just sick and tired of the divisive religious hatriotism.

My s/o could not believe this man would do such a thing in our home, and was so happy that I told him off and threw him out that she apologized for getting angry at me for letting last nights Malloy show (on the Swift Boat vermin) get me so upset.

Anger IS a gift, if used wisely.

59. Be sure to let his supervisor know why he lost the business
I would of done the same as you .

I walked out of a 7-11 in Tahoe because they had
bush's framed picture behind the counter . I loudly proclaimed
"I can't give business to anyone who supports that criminal"
while pointing at the picture I walked out .

60. They lost close to $2000
Not a big deal for a large company, but a loss nonetheless.

I'll probably get a follow-up call next week. They will hear about it then.

66. No, you need to tell them
I don't suppose what the guy did was unusual, but it's completely inappropriate and unprofessional, even for an exterminator. He probably won't tell his bosses the truth about why he didn't get the job. They obviously think it's OK for him to go around wearing a sandwich board, and they need to know they're losing business because of it. I would call them.

A team from my company was recently warned not to mention politics in front of a particular client, because one of our people had made a comment about the war that offended their CEO. As if the rest of us didn't know better. You just don't do that.

Maybe Ms. Harris has pug companies planting dumbos like this to try to negatively impact Kerry. They're desperate so I imagine they'll try anything.
