Krugman vs O'Reilly This Weekend (CNBC, G.E. Russert)
This is the interview show that runs at around 6 P.M. ET and 1 A.M. on Saturdays.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A44149-2004Aug5.html

.... Fox News Channel's chief talking head was invited to "chat" with Paul Krugman, New York Times columnist and author of "The Great Unraveling," after one of the "Tim Russert Show" producers learned that O'Reilly had issued a challenge to any New York Times reporter or columnist to engage in a debate with him. ....

According to a transcript of their "conversation," a copy of which was given to the TV Column, it was everything you'd expect.

O'Reilly called Krugman a "quasi-socialist"; Krugman called that "slander" and said if he is a quasi-socialist then O'Reilly is a "quasi-murderer"; O'Reilly pronounced Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" a bit of "Nazi propaganda" that reinforced all of Krugman's "paranoid delusions"; Krugman insisted Moore's flick was "flawed" but was made by "a guy who really does love this country"; Russert hardly got a word in edgewise; and a good time was had by all. One of those exchanges that make you so proud to be a journalist.

During their give and take -- okay, maybe it's more accurate to say push and shove, or slap and smack -- O'Reilly would periodically accuse Krugman of not letting him get in a sentence, or words to that effect.

So we counted and, according to The Washington Post TV Team Transcript Tally, O'Reilly actually got in 321 sentences during the "debate," to Krugman's 258.

13. Yes, but I always cringe when a bombastic talking head from the right
takes on a mild-mannered scribe from the left. Krugman might be the smarter of the two (not a glowing endorsement of Krugman, that) but he may not be a good debater. He may not be able to shout the other guy down. Like the slaughter we witnessed, of Al Franken at the hands of Hannity at the convention.
Even though Micheal Moore was more than a handful for O'Reilly, he would not shut up for days about how he 'handled' Moore.

3. I *loved* that they counted his words
I also wonder if Bill actually knows what "quasi" means. He is a "quasi-murderer," as well as a "quasi-fascist," and a "quasi-criminal."

4. O'Lielly considers it not getting a word in
he isn't running 2:1 in the sentence department. Gawd this guy just pisses me off, even when I rarely agree with him, he's always gotta play the I am all knowing and wise crap... and no matter what he ALWAYS spins shit his way, even when it's obvious he lost. "We'll let the viewers decide" and the O'Lielly-ites e-mail and say "Oh, Bill, you ruled, you mopped the floor with him" This guy has an ego that could suck in half the known universe.

6. The downside ...

All the conservatives will use this as further proof of the left wing bias at the New York Times. When in fact, Krugman is a small minority of reports who actually DO THEIR JOB at the New York Times instead re-arranging text faxed to them by the Heritage Foundation.

7. This is all we see on TV anymore
us vs them. Who wins the knockout. If Russert really want to educate his audience he would have booked Krugman alone.

9. Mr. Krugman Is A National Treasure
He is actually not that far to the left, but he is an honest man with an acute mind and clear sight....

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

10. PK: "(Shrub)'s lying" and "Watergate moment to come"
*******QUOTE*******

http://www.mediachannel.org/views/dissector/affalert242.shtml

.... "I had a bad feeling about Bush, from an economic standpoint, as far back as the 2000 presidential campaign," says Paul Krugman, "I just felt -- My God, he's lying through his teeth!"

Krugman, who worked as a staffer at the Council of Economic Advisers during the Reagan administration, says his government experience taught him that "What you see in one agency or area can usually be applied to an entire administration."

In other words, if they are lying about the budget, they're probably lying about other things as well -- like, say, the presence of WMD in Iraq, or 'links' between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda. ....

...Krugman says it's time for a showdown. "Can we break the machine that is imposing right-wing radicalism on the United States?" he asks. "The scariest part is that the media is part of that machine. There will have to be some kind of reckoning soon, a possible Watergate moment to come. . . Things aren't all the way unraveled yet . . . and alternative scenarios still exist.

"We need above all sunlight! We need to see what is actually going on," he concludes. "When are people going to wake up?"

11. Exactly.
He's been attacked by the left for many of his columns. I think what's happened is that Bushco is so out of whack, and Krugman is so bright, eloquent and honest tha he's certainly going to be diametrically opposed to Bushco. Well, anyone who's reasonably honest and bright is going to be diametrically opposed to Bushco, so...
