Anybody seen that new Helen Keller quarter?
I mean, the lady was a Socialist.

Very strange for Alabama, but hey, I'll take it.

(My blog has a good link to Keller's socialist legacy.)

1. Define "New"
Hasn't it been out for like a year or something?

2. I Thought This Was a Joke at First
Coming directly from 'Latest Posts,' I just assumed this post was in the Lounge. No, I haven't seen the new quarter, but I'll alert my wife - who works in a credit union - to watch for it. Displaying my ignorance, I didn't realize she was a socialist.

3. She was a hardcore socialist
Check out the book "Lies my teacher told me" sometime, it's got some good info on why that fact about Keller is conveniently left out when schools teach about her life.

4. Read "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James Loewen
Most of Keller's later life -- the stuff that took place after "The Miracle Worker" leaves off -- was devoted to social justice and labor rights. The truly amazing thing about her is not just that she overcame such incredible physical handicaps, but that desipe those handicaps and the very late start her education got as a result, she made incredibly elouqent arguments for the cause of the American socialists of her day. Which, of course, is exactly WHY "The Miracle Worker" leaves off where it does, IMO.

11. Keller had radical political views
She wrote books on it; which didn't sell very well. Everybody just wanted to hear about her unusual life - no one cared for her political views figuring what could a blind deaf woman know. FWIW - An interesting fact about HK that few people know nowadays is that she was beautiful.
