"THE WAR ON TERROR"
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 11:30 AM by mzmolly
Why in the hell are we letting THEM (the media) and Bush call it that?!

We are not having a "WAR ON TERROR" were having a war on Iraq and Afghanistan, ignoring TERRORISTS by and large. We could be having a WAR ON TERROR, if we didn't go into Iraq for no friggin good reason!

The Kerry campaign needs to re-define this somehow. Not sure how, but I tire of the media saying, "and now for the update on "THE WAR ON TERROR" we will speak to our foreign corespondent in Iraq, Bill Blick ... Bill, what's happening in Iraq today? :puke:

As long as the media AND GEORGE W are able to define the war in this manner, Iraq is seen as a legitimate threat to Merica' and they were not.

What say you?

2. It's not even a "war" on Iraq. It's an occupation.
The twisting of language is very telling, isn't it?

3. war on terra
That is the one phrase I cant stand
"War on terror"
We are not at war, congress has not declared war
I see it on the news everyday, in the paper, from Bush
I hope when Kerry is elected, that phrase goes away

6. Terror is a method, not an opponent
They might as well say The War on Truck Bombs or The War on Hijacked Airplanes.

war" against nonagressor countries. It basically is a blank-check philosophy that gives the president the right to declare war against ANY country that might "harbor terrorists." :grr:

It's all smoke and mirrors, but Americans are waking up.

10. Agreed. The thing thats striking is that even so called "objective"
journalists still define the war in Iraq as "a war on terror" ~ It chaps my hide.

11. Me, too.
Another one that caught on for awhile was "homocide bombers?" What the fuck???

I guess they thought "suicide bombers" generated sympathy for the bombers. Messed up, isn't it?

8. Good intelligence work
coupled with smart security and effective policing - plus the cooperation of other nations doing the same - are what we need to break up terror plots and capture those who would harm us.

Invading other countries only invites terror and is completely counterproductive.

What chimpco has done besides kill a lot of Iraqis and Afganis - for oil, profit, and Imperialism - is wage war on the American people with the most important weapon they have -- their arsenal of fear. It's up to all of us to fight back and throw these bums out on their asses Nov. 2.

9. Exactly right. How do we get the media to stop feeding into Bush's
definition of the war?

I like the idea of a catchy meme. "War of error" as another person mentioned.

12. These guys are masters at defining the terms.
It helps, of course, that the corporate media plays right along.

Once you surrender the language, then they frame the debate. And that gives them enormous advantage.

In fact, they even define their opponents. Look at what they've done to the word "liberal." They've invested it with so much of their bile it's become poison in America.

14. I agree, and it's even more frustrating that we let them define the terms.

13. This is funny you posted this today
I was planning to post something similar. Using the phrase 'The War on Terror' is absurd. Terror is a feeling and you can't declare war on it unless you are maybe helping folks to feel more safe. Alerts, invading another country, constant reminders that we have to afraid all the time certainly are not helping diminish terror. The whole phrase and its use incenses me.

17. As LBJ said about the Tonkin Gulf Resolution - "It's a blank check."
And, congress dutifully fills in the amounts to "support our troops" so they can protect our "Vital Interests" - otherwise known as Corporate America.

20. how about the
"illegal occupation of Iraq"

At my school, I do not allow students to refer to "homicide bombers" or even "suicide bombers". I recommend that they call these poor desperate people--"activists" this more reasonable describes their true motives.
