Bumbling Bush at Unity Conference
by persimmony
Fri Aug 6th, 2004 at 06:48:04 EDT

A friend of mine just called from the lobby of the Unity Conference in DC, the largest journalist-of-color conference in the country, where Bush just spoke.
One journalist there, an African-American man named Ronald Martin (?) badgered Bush with a series of nuanced questions leading him from condemning affrimative action and "race quotas" to discussing "legacy quotas" and whether Bush 2 supports university policies that weight the sons and daughters of alumni with extra points toward admission. Following this line of reasoning, Mr. Martin ultimately got Bush to state: "I believe colleges should act affirmatively."
Another journalist there, a Native American asked Bush what sovereignty meant to him. He responded:
"Sovereignty means just that, sovereignty. We have given you sovereignty, so now you are sovereign."
Can't wait for those debates!!!
****

DUers: I'm trying to find a transcript of this speech, but I'm not having much luck. Have any of you seen one?

On edit: Read the comments, too! Hi-larious!

22. Just listened to that clip... he's just falling apart!
OMG! The audience is laughing AT HIM, not with him. He can't even answer a basic question.. he keeps trying to be clever by neither confirming nor denying his support for affirmative action.. but he comes off sounding incredibly stupid. I have the feeling that a lot of journalists walked out of that room and said to one another.. 'I can't BELIEVE that man is running our country. I'm frightened'.

He was obviously in over his head.. he kept trying to say "support" but he was stumbling over it again and again using the word "suppote", almost sounding as though he was mocking gangsta rap. Wierd shit.

45. He's Like A Malfunctioning Hard Drive
The data goes in...the light comes on and there's that lag until the data is sorted and an answer comes out. Usually it's the programmed talking point Karl or Karen or Condi told him to keep using. "Turning The Corner" is one of the latest meme's he's been programmed with. Once he's programmed, all the other Bushbots are, so that that meme...from "Axis Of Evil" to "the economy is improving" is spread far and wide...amplified by a complacent media and the Rovewellian machine makes shineola from shit.

The "fun" is watching the "crutches" this boy uses. A crutch being a word or phrase someone will lean on in that gap time when the hard drive is trying to reconnect. In radio this is when the personality gives the time or reads the forecast or gives out the phone number...it's a few seconds so a thought can be composed. Or, it's a moment to stall in hopes of changing the subject or confusing the audience so much they just want to move on.

You can tell Junior is having hard-drive troubles when he starts to lean forward on the podium...or his eyes jerk back and forth; looking around for a clue flying around the room. He'll start going to crutch words like "terrorist", "evil"...or start piling on; such as his usual jag about how evil Hussein was with the tortue cells, rape room...Abu Grahb (oops...how'd that get in here??)...leaning further into the podium so it appears like he's lecturing rather than answering...like a parent trying to shut up a 5 year old with stories of the boogie man.

I was amazed to see an article on Newsmax...Yes, THAT Newsmax (and no I didn't order the 50 free copies of the O'Neill book) that pointed out some of these observations and more that the writer felt is hurting this re-selection.

Most of us here are astounded that Bunnypants went to speak to this group in the first place considering his snub to the NAACP and how warmly they welcomed Kerry. I guess Rove thought he could sneak this one in and maybe grab a soundbite or a shot of a hall of minorities applauding their boy...have him give a short speech and vanish. But whoever threw him out there unscripted either is working for us or has the reddest ass in the beltway. He couldn't even find his way off stage.

Yes, it was a pathetic performance...and I give it 6 stars and three thumbs up. Must see TV for all.

Cheers!

3. LOL! But no matter what, the people are going to find him
'lovable' and 'affable'. An innocent bumbler, pure of heart and mind. What they seem to forget is that they are talking about the President of The United States. The leader of the free world. Not a class clown.

Nor have I heard when (if) C-Span will re-run it. Please try and watch the whole thing if they do - words truly do not do it justice.

BTW, the great reporter of whom you speak is Roland Martin.

25. I am constantly shocked, saddened, and astonished ...
that a man of such little character and ability could become the President in our Nation. I think religious fundamentalism and a cult mentality are much to blame. We must fight these zealots to retain control of our Nation and never let our guard down again.

11. In the 3rd paragraph he sez" Imagine if we did not give out the warning
and something happened to one of the buildings....?"

Which is exactly what happened in Aug of 2001 when he got the CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER WARNING and did nothing......and 34 days later..
......9/11 happens and 3000 people died for shit. Bush is clearly at fault for not giving out any warning, rejecting the Hart/Rudman answers. He did nothing for 8 months, nothing about terror.

20. 3 years ago, Bush was on Vacation...to make it "a working vacation"
They scheduled a meeting in Crawford.

Everyone of import was there.

One of the subjects was the PDB file with a titke: "Osama coming to America to attack us"** I can't recall exact words but this is close enough..

Much warnings from other quarters confirmed a CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER....

Our Prez obviously did nothing with the warning, no up grade at any Ports, no communications of any kind re to this matter... they let it slide

Someday, and I hope soon, we will learn of this meeting and what really went on. There will be a book written about how Bush got away with major Malfeasance.....

21. "Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States"
http://www.americanprogress.org/site/pp.asp?c=biJRJ8OVF&b=44925

Note that they don't call it HOMELAND amongst themselves.

And they DID do something with the warning - they got out of town! They knew DC was a target so they left! Bush to TX, Dick to WY. For an entire month the cowards hid out waiting for the attack. Finally they could not stretch it out any longer and were forced to return, but immediately they took off again for Camp David and then Florida. They saved THEMSELVES, and that's ALL they did.

30. Everyone in Tower Two would have been saved
Had security at the building been aware of the terror threat, or had the NYPD been aware and able to inform WTC security, Tower Two would have been immediately evacuated. As it was, Tower Two was told to return to work, because the thought was it was too dangerous to evacuate people onto the plaza while the fire was raging in Tower One and flaming debris was dropping onto the plaza. So that decision was made with not enough information and it cost many many lives, thanks to Bush doing NOTHING.

41. I managed to catch part of this on Cspan tonight...
and I was simultaneously amused, outraged, nauseated, vindicated, and seriously frightened, all at the same time.

When he accused the guy of "putting words in my mouth", I remembered the scene from Lord of the Rings when Bilbo is asking to see the ring, now in Frodo's posession, first politely, then his features distort into pure evil when he says "give it to me!"

That was the REAL personality of Bush bubbling up out of the veneer.

I'm still hovering between thinking he's the antichrist or the missing link.

43. Other favorites
"So we have a, in terms of law enforcement, we have a duty to uphold
innocence and guilt."

"Tribal sovereignty means that, it's sovereign. You're a --
you've been given sovereignty, and you're viewed as a sovereign entity. And,
therefore, the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one
between sovereign entities."

"We actually misnamed the war on
terror, it ought to be the struggle against ideological extremists who do not
believe in free societies who happen to use terror as a weapon to try to shake
the conscience of the free world."

"Condi Rice is there because she happens
to be a very competent, smart, capable woman. She's also African American. And
she is my closest foreign policy advisor."

Can't find the one where he said "diverse" people come in and tell him he's not looking well, or something...

44. He's bombing.
The audience is dead silent. He makes some lame "joke" and -- nothing. It's almost like a bad comedy club act. He has this really obnoxious tone of voice where he seems to be talking down to his audience. He keeps saying "in other words," like he think the listeners are too stupid to get it the first time. He sucks enough to bend light.

The audience sat there stone-faced for the most part or openly disdainful while he broke out in a flop sweat and nervously rambled on desperately looking for some kind of affirmation. I kept waiting for Chuck Barris to bang the gong and put him out of his misery.

46. They LAUGHED at him
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040806/pl_nm/campaign_bush_dc_9

Still, the openly skeptical laughter that greeted some of his answers to their questions was a stark contrast to the fawning crowds Bush usually faces on the campaign trail.

A lone heckler was escorted out of the hall by security after interrupting the president's opening speech with shouts of "Shame on you, Mr. Bush!" and calling him a liar.

Many in the crowd laughed when Bush struggled to answer a question about what tribal sovereignty means for Native American tribes in the 21st century.

"Tribal sovereignty means that; it's sovereign. I mean, you're a -- you've been given sovereignty, and you're viewed as a sovereign entity. And therefore the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one between sovereign entities," Bush replied.
