Now or Never: The Final Protest! - Aug, 29th in NYC
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 12:10 PM by veracity
There are going to be important protests in NYC when the GOP invades the Big Apple later this month. This is the most important protest of all...as the article says, it's now or never. You might want to download this and give it out. This has to be the mother of all protests...and might not be..... WILL YOU BE THERE????

NOW OR NEVER: THE FINAL PROTEST
NYC - AUGUST 29, 2004

THE PURPOSE

This is the summer of our discontent. In a few short weeks, three and a half years of suppressed anger, frustration and despair will spill onto the streets of New York City. Many of us have been there and done that before. We marched to protest the preparations for war, and we lost. We marched to protest the invasion and the killing, and we lost. We marched to end the occupation and bring our soldiers home, and we lost. This time, it will be our final protest. This time, it’s now or never.

Starting on August 29th, hundreds of thousands of us, from every walk of life, and from every state in the nation, will gather to condemn the effrontery of holding the 2004 Republican National Convention in the home of the Twin Towers. We will gather to denounce the GOP as it attempts to exploit the tragedy that befell this great city on September 11th. We will gather to rage at the conventioneers as they gleefully applaud the most devastating policies in the history of this country. But this will be the last time we will gather to raise our voices in protest against this deplorable presidency. Because this time, it’s now or never.

In all honesty, we’re not really coming to protest the convention. We’re not coming to influence the people in Madison Square Garden who admire and support George Bush. We’re not coming to rebuke those who are pledged to this failed president and his destructive goals. We’re coming to New York to make a very important statement to the undecided voters of America, and to send a very crucial message to people all around the world. We’re coming to speak our piece for the very last time. And we must be heard, because this time, it’s now or never.

1. As much as I'm going to love seeing everyone out there
The curse of this protest is going to be the handful of nutjobs that burn the flag and attack the police, and of course this is all the footage you're going to see on the news with some talkinghead saying

"And as you can see here Mr. Humes, Democrats are attacking the police and burning the flag. Clearly these Democrats hate America"

2. An excellent point
Demonstrations should be held in every city in America that day. Stay home, but do your part.

3. Dress like you're on trial for murder.
Dress like you're going to a job interview. Don't give the major media footage of scruffy kids in cutoffs and t-shirts being abused by the cops. Give them footage of solid citizens dressed like the church every Sunday class being abused by the cops. Yes, it will be sweltering. However, discomfort is worth it if you're making a point.

This is the kind of thing we need to do, folks, to convince the heartland that protestors are just like them.

If you see some creep trying to start trouble, link arms around him and march him over to the police. Tell them you've made a citizen's arrest and describe what he was doing. Make a big deal of it. Don't bother checking for his name on the blotter the following day, they don't prosecure GOP operatives.

We learned these two lessons too late during the 60s and 70s. Please learn them on time now.

4. If people don't come.... Bush wins by default!
You cannot turn tail, here....and worry about what the media will say. In 1968 - the scruffy peacenik protesters were arrested and defiled... but they won the day. There is no reason for violence at this rally, any more than there was at all the other anti war protests. I was at every one in NYC and in Washington...and they were without incident. The police in NYC were very helpful for the most part, - many giving us the 'thumbs up' sign on the sly. COME ON DOWN!
