INCREDIBLE: Bush demands to know race of photographer assigned to Cheney
Bush camp solicits race of Star staffer
By C.J. Karamargin
ARIZONA DAILY STAR

President Bush's re-election campaign insisted on knowing the race of an Arizona Daily Star journalist assigned to photograph Vice President Dick Cheney.

The Star refused to provide the information.

Cheney is scheduled to appear at a rally this afternoon at the Pima County Fairgrounds.

A rally organizer for the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign asked Teri Hayt, the Star's managing editor, to disclose the journalist's race on Friday. After Hayt refused, the organizer called back and said the journalist probably would be allowed to photograph the vice president.

"It was such an outrageous request, I was personally insulted," Hayt said later.

Danny Diaz, a spokesman for the president's re-election campaign, said the information was needed for security purposes.

"All the information requested of staff, volunteers and participants for the event has been done so to ensure the safety of all those involved, including the vice president of the United States," he said.

1. At least this instance of Bush administration racism is on the record
and undeniable.

3. 2 possible explanations:
1) they're looking for a black to place behind shrub as a photo-op. see, we're not racists, we have at least 1 black behind me.

2) security has been instructed to turn back all blacks. they're probably democrats and protesters and disruptors. so if there's a black journalist, they need to know so that they can tell security to let him through.

neither explanation is a good one.

4. I'll go with option two
They don't want a Black photographer because they assume he or she will be a liberal, and make Cheney look bad in his shots.

5. So, let me get this straight...
When Bush asks African Americans, "What has the Democratic party done for you", we can now respond with, "We do not racial profile, period, unlike the Republicans."

6. Was the same info requested from everybody, or just the photog?
Journalists covering the president or vice president must undergo a background check and are required to provide their name, date of birth and Social Security number. The Star provided that information Thursday for Popat and this reporter C.J. Karamargin)...
I can vouch for that--I had to provide my name, address, and SS before I visited a military base to help shoot a commercial. But the real point here, of course, is that the photographer appears to have been singled out because of her name--Popat "bothered" them, but Karamargin didn't?

Danny Diaz, a spokesman for the president's re-election campaign, said...it is the practice of the White House to ask for racial information...
Well, wouldn't it look better to ask for EVERYONE's racial information up front? Or is the managing editor is making the whole thing up? Am I to believe the managing editor decided to make a fuss about Popat without mentioning that Karamargin's racial information had been requested, too.

...Popat's race was necessary to allow the Secret Service to distinguish her from someone else who might have the same name.
The same name but NOT the same race? Yeah, right--her name is Popat, not Jones!

:headbang:
rocknation

P.S. Diaz sounds Hispanic to me. What's HIS racial information--and doublecheck his gender, too, while you're at it!

7. Please read the article before stating they were black - there was one
reference in the article to the person's race:

"One has to wonder what they were going to do with that information," Hayt said. "Because she has Indian ancestry, were they going to deny her access? I don't know."

8. Is this SOP?
Do they always ask about the person's race?

9. Look at this journalist's name. I doubt that the Kerry campaign...
...fell apart over it. It just goes to show you that Bush and Cheney know how hated they are, and they're rightfully paranoid about it. But they have to get out there and campaign, setting up adoring audience photo ops everywhere they go. Otherwise, they'll have no cover of legitimacy, when they steal the election through vote-counting fraud.
