Regarding the GOP media machine: Is this the first time that a political campaign has moved away from traditional attacks and operations to instead focus on cutting down an opponent by denigrating the mechanics of politics?
For instance, this is the first time I've heard anybody start talking about the "bounce" and why a 15 point bounce is necessary after a convention, otherwise forgetaboutit. I've heard more poll analysis (and discrediting) by representatives of the campaigns than in any other election season in my admittedly short experience.
It feels like the Republicans are sort of..experimenting with new methods of campaigning. This is the political equivalent of metafiction, where the campaign itself is cognizant of its own operations, trumping the traditional role of the news media ("These are the poll numbers, here's some analysis..") by being both its own executor and judge. Possibly even its own audience.
It's interesting, but also emetic.
