Sandy Berger Cleared of Withholding Material From 9/11 Commission
By SCOT J. PALTROW
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
July 30, 2004; Page A6

Officials looking into the removal of classified documents from the National Archives by former Clinton National Security Adviser Samuel Berger say no original materials are missing and nothing Mr. Berger reviewed was withheld from the commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

4. I can find no other similar article using Google news.
(And I'm pretty creative. )

I would love a second source.

5. Now need to investigate White House orchestration of smear campaign
No question this matter was leaked maliciously by Repubs to muddy the 911 commission waters last week and rain on Dems convention parade.

8. So, have any of y'all read the entire article?
If so, how 'bout posting just a little more of it? Dunno if this one-sentence excerpt is enough to get excited about, especially without the context of the full piece.

It definitely serves as a possible heads-up, though. Thanks for finding it, Warrior!

9. I've read the hardcopy...
...on page A6 of the dead-tree edition of the WSJ. Not going to retype it here though.

It basically says that the archivist confirm that Berger did not remove any original documents (he was given mostly photocopies), and that all the originals were presented to the 9/11 commission.

It doesn't absolve Berger of taking some of the copies he was given, but it does undermine the "he was trying to destroy documents and cover up for Clinton" meme the Republicans are pumping.

10. Weren't these "Documents" actually written by Berger in the first place?
So he accidently got some of "his" documents mixed up with his other documents in his briefcase and they were only copies to begin with. Why did they have to bring poor ol' Socks the first cat into it anyway?

13. To reinforce their talking points
You know, the standard NEWTonian word association games:

Democrat=Clinton=Kerry, associated with:

investigation
illegal act
coverup
destruction of documents (he may have destroyed some of the copies he took home)
poor security
liberal media (for "accepting the spin" that it's not a big deal)
...and so on.

12. Think that will stop wingers from talking about Berger's socks?
It won't. If Kerry is elected, we will be pointlessly arguing with wingers about "Bergergate" four years from now.

15. Just called Tom Davis office
Congress critter who wanted to open a BIG investigation into this and told him to cease and desis (don't know how to spell that) and that maybe he should investigate something of importance and stop being so damn partisan. Ok thaks we'll tell him

I use to be in Davis district but they redistricte the undesirable Dems out and into Jim Moran's district.

17. You know it is too bad these freaks
didn't pay as much attention to Sandy Berger when he was warning them about OBL - maybe they could have prevented 9/11 - but maybe they didn't want to prevent it - I HATE THESE PEOPLE
