The Sharpton Text transcription
<http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/apelection_story.asp?category=1131&slug=CVN%20Sharpton%20Text>

The transcriber had a problem with this little bit:

Mr. President, the reason we are fighting so hard, the reason we took Florida so seriously, is our right to vote wasn't gained because of our age. Our vote was soaked in the blood of martyrs, soaked in the blood of good men (inaudible) soaked in the blood of four little girls in Birmingham. This vote is sacred to us.

The transcriber got it wrong. My sister heard the speech and told me what he said there: soaked in the blood of Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner, soaked in the blood of four little girls in Birmingham.

Andrew Goodman. James Chaney. Michael Schwerner.

I'm glad Al mentioned them.

Andrew was a student at Queens College. He died before I ever got there, but I went to school with people still shocked by his murder.

1. Still think that was the best speech of the week
Say what you want about Sharpton, but he killed out there that night. And the media people behaved deplorably, and should be ashamed of themselves. The Daily Show did a good job calling those bastards out.

2. To anyone who has a problem with Al Sharpton
standing up and reminding America of these reichwing obscenties and more, I say WAKE UP and get a heart.

3. "Mr. President, in all due respect
... Mr. President, read my lips: Our vote is not for sale."

That was awesome!

5. He sometimes slips obscure, but important, names into speeches
like at the first big protest on the Mall before the war, when he remembered one of his heroes, Allard Lowenstein.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allard_K._Lowenstein

Must be rough on the poor people who have to listen to these things and transcribe them. They can't be expected to know all these names, and there's no time (or money) to have knowledgeable editors read over these transcripts.

Thank you aquart for writing these names down for us. I wondered who they were too when he said them.
