It's just sad
I've finally been watching some of the DNC tonight, as much as I could while dealing with the kids and all .....

And after watching it, seeing the "pundits" and seeing the coverage in general ....

It's just sad. I'm just wondering if anyone my age (42) or close to it can imagine this type of discourse even ten years ago.

I.E. the Joe Scarboroughs, the Faux News "panel", all the assholes who are obviously just paid to bash everything they see and hear.

Even some cunt on the floor, who interviewed a Colorado Congresswomen after Ron Reagan's speech just jumped the hell all over the woman who was trying to explain how George Bush had shut down cell research. She was just a nasty bitch about it.

I can't imagine anyone on the national stage, at any past DNC, or RNC for that matter, spouting the kind of fucked up rhetoric we've been hearing.

Oh, and the fact that the networks just aren't covering this at all. Most Americans aren't gonna see any of this.

I'm trying to be all jazzed up about it, but I have to feel very sad for the state of things in our country today.

Just wondering who else feels this way

1. Watch the PBS coverage
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 12:31 AM by jpgray
The only major asshat they gave time to was David Brooks, and he at least pretends to act reasonable. But I agree--coverage on other networks often descends into the ridiculous. I still like Larry King, for some reason. :D

17. And Brooks is bad enough!
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 12:41 AM by liberalmuse
I loved it when Brooks was salivating over Obama's speech, and then I guess his programming kicked in again a little bit later and he tried to 'caution' everyone from getting too hyped up about him. Dear God!

For over a year, I've only used the tv for viewing dvd's. I had no idea how bad it had gotten. Today I found out that I LOATHE pundits. They must be eliminated!

I'm 41, and remember when news was...NEWS, not just something shown in tiny little clips in order to set the stage for a bunch of shallow dumbass Ted Baxter's to sit around and gossip about.

On edit: subconsciously stole a term from another post.

9. Where is the insult there?
We all have expletives attached to our genitals, and they are used pejoratively to describe members of our gender. Is being a cunt worse than being a dick? Personally I don't use the terms, but I don't get why one is an insult to all women and the other is an insult to one guy.

I personally will not use the word, but it's not clear to me why one of the words is a sexist insult to all the members of a gender and the other is simply a run-of-the-mill male-only pejorative.

24. Ask the administrators...They've been over this at great length before
They made their feeling known. The word is inappropriate in their opinion. Since its their board, their opinion is what matters.

It's like if you go to a private party at someones home and piss on the sofa-you're going out of your way to be rude and offend people-and thats not what this board is about.

41. Were you on this board when we went through the wars over
those two words? They went on for a very long time and they were very nasty. Many long-time female posters were hurt, offended, and angry. Some even left the board for good over this single issue. They were, for some reason, offended when women are referred to as bitches or cunts. They made it clear. Duh.

The administrators own this site; they have made their feelings about cunt and bitch WELL known. It was a very divisive issue then and, if it is ignored, it will become a divisive issue again. We don't need that shit right now, its time to elect a president.

If the admins change their minds, I'll be happy to publicly apologize to all concerned. In the meantime, I have too many female friends on this board, to let anyone insult them.

20. Yeah, but that's sorta not what I"m talking about here
I appreciate the advice to spare myself the pain, but my pain is what I find important here ( in a sense) because what I see in this great country of ours is a level of discourse that has sunk to the point of eighth-grade insult hurling for the sole purpose of smearing somebody that you're being paid to smear.

It's just sad to me. I can't imagine this kind of bullshit even ten years ago, and certainly not twenty or thirty years ago.

Where's it gonna end? How far downward can the trend go? It seems it can't get any worse than it is now, but you know that's not true

I see this country in a whole new light then the way I was supposed to perceive it growing up. Just in the last 4 years so much has changed. As if we're on the brink of destroying this planet. I mean an all out Nuclear war. It scares me. Chuck Palahniuk says, "Each generation wants to be the last." and he's right. I'm just worried Bush wants it too much.

I don't know whether to be more depressed that the media so discounts the importance of the conventions (despite the critical need to involve more Americans in the electoral process) OR that what little coverage is so damned NASTY. Every damned comment has been edged with total disdain--even from the so-caled mainstream electronic media. I honestly don't know what is to become of us if we don't turn this situation around and restore the FAIRBNESS DOCTRINE.

On edit, PBS has been passable in terms of both coverage and commentary. Tune in. The worst that you have to contend with is David Brooks and the others tend to keep him in line.

10. Yeah, no kidding.
To think the asshat networks like ABC, NBC, and CBS aren't showing any coverage of this at all, and that ones without cable (in addition to the sheep) missed out on Obama, Reagan, and Teresa, while CNN, Faux, and MSNBC spun and distorted what they said the moment it exited their mouths.

This convention is a fucking masterpiece, but you wouldn't know it through the media. I can only hope that the message is so powerful that it cuts through all the shit trying to hold it back and reaches a small percentage of people.

15. exactly. For instance, THK's speech was awesome
the crowd went nuts for her. Yet immediately thereafter everywhere I switched channels to, they were just jumping all over her, bashing her.

It's just so transparent, so obvious, what they're doing.

The only potential silver lining is that their transparency will reveal themselves to the viewers.

But it's still just really sad that it's come to this!

47. Teresa's speech WAS awesome...
and I'm furious about Chris Wallace's comments about her. He said she shouldn't have had a prime spot and she talked too much about herself. She's not enough like *Laura Bush* someone on the panel said! Brit Hume said her speech was unusual--translation: too far out because she talked about growing up under a dictatorship in South Africa and used some lines from Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural speech:

"The mystic chords of memory stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the organ when again touched, as surely they will be by the better angels of our nature."

Civility, compassion and tolerance is gone from the party of Lincoln. These people are just sick!

And I will for once give PBS credit here.

The stuff on FNC and MSNBC is just soft-core cable porn for sexually repressed people. For all the exposure these shows get, they live in a similar ghetto as Queer As Folk and Sex In the City.

It's like the similarities between Playboy and National Enquirer. Have you become like those grannies who detest the Enquirer but faithfully still buy it each week?

46. I agree, it is very sad
That's why I've been tuned in to C-Span. I want to enjoy the Convention. I want to bask in the glow of hope, and not get tainted by the BS the pundits and alleged journalists pass off as legitimate and newsworthy commentary.

When the RNC arrives in NYC for their convention, the news coverage will be handled entirely different. They will report with much reverence. It will be sickening. I will watch, only because I want to see and hear what nonsense they have up their sleeves and to be able to combat their rhetoric in any way within my power.

One more comment regarding this thread. I have never joined in any of the multiple threads discussing misogyny on DU. I personally don't have a problem with people using certain words in their speech, except for one word. I believe in free speech, and also believe that how we use words reflects more upon ourselves than anything else. Anyway, I truly do not like the use of *cunt* in any way, shape or form - including as a description of a Faux news reporter whom I have no respect for - that is if they have any authentic reporters on their staff.

Other than than that, I agree with your post. The media discourse is not what it once was. We already have a generation of young people who have no idea what real news reporting is all about. There is no longer honest political discussions. The respect of give and take. This is incredibly sad to me. Have you seen 'Outfoxed'. yet?
