"They'd rather shoot their mother than raise a tax."-Davis
I missed Gray Davis' speech yesterday (?), and I was watching C-Span this morning--one of the reporters for Roll Call, or one of those, repeated that sentence and attributed it to Davis.

I heard that he said the Republicans were trying to steal the election, but anyone catch Gray saying this?

If this is what Gray's got, I think he may do better than I thought.

1. Yeah, but it's not true
The truth is that while most Republicans would rather shoot their brothers, Uncles, Aunts, Grandpas, and cousins than raises, they generally won't shoot their fathers, mothers, Sisters, or grandmas.

Of course there are always exceptions to the rule.

2. Are you being sarcastic...
or do you honestly believe that the way for Gray Davis to win the recall election is to whine and disparage his opponents.

We need a Democrat with an agenda that will help the state. California is legitimately in trouble. I don't know that Gray Davis did anything to cause this, but he certainly was not succesful in preventing it.

4. The whole recall effort was a "Whine & Disparage" campaign!
Mostly conjecture but that's what it was.

I think Davis needs to both attack these cretins and call them what they are, liars, as well as present something to alleviate people's misguided fears.

It's not an either/or problem. Basically he should walk and chew gum at the same time.

5. Davis is attempting to play the numbers
The divisive Us vs. Them tactic amounts to a statistical gamble. Davis is writing off every Republican voter and a chunk of independents third party voters and Democrats, counting on there being enough Democrats and independents and third party voters who believe his VRWC line to stop the recall.

He doesn't appear to give a shit what happens if he is kicked out of office.

13. This may work in California
We have enough Democrats in California that he may pull it off, but it is certainly a burn your bridges and scatter the ashes theory of running for office.

6. Is the legislature responsible for budget?
I heard someone say it takes two/thirds vote to pass the budget and Repubs would not go along? Is that true?

7. Repubs steadfastly refused to pass any tax increases
Yes, the budget requires a 2/3 majority. With barely over 1/3 of the Assembly and Senate, Republican legislators are able to stop a budget if they all vote the same way. This time they kept together on refusing to accept any tax increases.

8. Which governor in which state was able to prevent this huge theft
If I am not mistaken every single state is suffering the same problems. Maybe not to the same degree as California because of Kenny Boy but each state is in debt since Bush* took office.

12. Granholm in Michigan is doing a pretty good job of holding

Michigans shit together.

She looks like she's going to be a formidable politician and I think the Republicans in MI are afraid of her.

11. He'll win by telling the truth. And this is the truth.
This is election says way more about who the Republicans are than who Gray Davis is.

3. The "steal the election" theme is from Bill Clinton
In Gray's first speech 2 nights ago, he connected the Recall to the Republicans attempt at to impeach Bill Clinton, and to the Texas redistricting fight. This was definitely from his meeting with Bill Clinton. It was a very good speech.

Gray not only has to fight the Recall, but he has to help all Democrats inside and outside of California. That, I think, was the message from Bill Clinton.

9. This is why they need to pin Arnold down....
Does he or does he not plan on raising taxes? If not, what does he plan on cutting? Or does he plan on blaming the Democrats when he fails?

10. Exactly
What is important for us to push for from every candidate is their own platform. After we have that if they want to also attack some opponents, that's fine.

14. Hasn't he already said he wants to repeal Prop 13
So he can allow counties to raise property taxes. I seem to remember hearing that from some where.
