PBS--David Brooks--The Essence of His Weirdness
What is it exactly about David Brooks that makes him so weird? Not that I'm against weird, but I can't exactly put my finger on it. Is it his glasses? The kinetic movements he makes with his hands and arms as he's speaking? The hair? Eyes? What, exactly?

1. He is the kid who got beat up in school because of boogers on his nose
His whole presence just says loser weenie.

It's visceral. I just loathe him.

8. THAT'S IT!
I looks like a little mild, meek, mad scientist who looks harmless but can destroy the world--then wonders what happened! YIKES

7. Alright, I'm going to get flamed...
I'm watching the coverage on PBS (no cable), and I don't mind Brooks at all. He's giving as fair a shake as I'd ever expect from a conservative commentator.

I can't stand his writings in the Times though. Just saying.

10. I don't think you should get flamed.
It's just that he seems WEIRD. Odd. Off of center. Even before he opens his mouth.

There's clearly something wrong with that guy
I can't exactly put my finger on it, either. Part of it has to do with insincerity- the guy will say or write just about anything and it's often obvious that he doesn't actually believe it.

I also think he wants to be considered an intellectual, but he's not that smart. Like George Will, he's a phoney and he knows it... and he fears that other people know it, too.

9. The way he smirks/grins when he talks.
The nasty things he says and the mind-mannered way he
says them.

Sometimes I want to smack him, but truthfully he's miles
better than Paul Gigot or William Safire, the two guys who
sub for him when he's not there.

11. You think it's a smirk?
I mean, that's the weird thing about him. Do his lips really go that way or is it actually a smirk? Or is this his normal expression? Hell, I don't know.

12. He's not smarmy like Hannity, but it's a word
like smarmy.

Like a permanent rictus(sp?) grin that never goes away?

14. I'm not sure...

But I think it's the things he says. Always. It's like he's one of those false prophets raving in the the desert. But in a quiet, polite way.

15. It's also his utter desperation
He will do or say anything for approval. I just quoted him here, NY Times today:
