unless you are rich and can afford living in a beach house it is nice, other then that it is a dump. I've been there a couple of times and it wasn't pretty, I remember kids coming up to me with cups in there hands asking me for change. People on the street trying to sell me silver chains, told him no, he offered to lower the price. I said no again and he lowered the price of 10 silver chains to $20. I told him I didn't have the money and he ended up calling me "cheap". It is not a great place well, 95% of the country. You do have Cancun and beach houses.

You learn the culture, like in any country. It's much less expensive to live there, even with an occasional "gift" to the local officials. Certainly cheaper than the level of campaign contribution necessary to get fair treatment under Bush.

I've only spent time in the Yucutan, Quintana Roo - can't speak for the rest of Mexico - but I really liked the people there - also the food, the music, the arts and crafts & the Mayan ruins to explore.
However, I'm just about at the retirement stage - have to admit I couldn't move there if I had to find employment.

but I agree, Merida is lovely... Muchas Colores! The city of many colors. I happened to fall in love with Villadolid as well, the mayan indians, and with the itsy bitsy tiny villages at the topas on the side roads back to the coast. The gorgeous little huts, the palapas, and the cemetaries. We saw some gorgeous cemetaries as we meandered around. They were hypnotic!

It's a shame most north americans have such a narrow view of our american neighbors to the south, but it's probably better that way.

I do so wish too that north americans were educated enough to know that mexicans aren't latinos or hispanic, they're mexican. People from el salvador are el salvadoran, and people from Belize are Belize, and so on. The terms latino and hispanic indicate the conquest by the euros, and deprive mexicans of their heritage, and its actually a genuine insult to the glories of mexicana. Not all people living in mexico were mixed with the euros.

And not all mexicans make tacos.

I know Mexicans aren't latinos or hispanic. Plus, I probaly know more history of Mexico then you do. But when the census sends you a form, they don't ask whether you are a Mexican or a hispanic. The only option they give you is hispanic which is a reason why I said 30% of the population is hispanic when referring to that they were Mexicans. I know the difference between a Puerto Rican, a Native American, and a Mexican so can you get beyond this? I have friends who are Mexican.

I know not all Tacos are made by Mexicans but what are Tacos? Are tacos mexican food or are they not? If not, why is it that I can find Tacos in all the parts of Mexico I have visited.

I have been there and not just once, but many times. I have been to Tijuana, but also been to Nogales, Tacupeto, El Rosario(which is a very nice town), Moctezuma, Chihuahua(which is decent compared to most of Mexico but not an ideal place to live), and many other places. I didn't say everyone or MOST people but a lot of people are trying to get into Mexico everyday, if you do not know that then you are obviously living under a rock. I seen more homeless people then I ever imagined, the houses are built like matchboxes.

Now about the racist part, I live in Mesa, Arizona where the hispanic population is 30%. I have lots of Mexican friends, probaly 10x more then you do. So I can tell the difference between a Mexican and someone with a tan so don't say "People like that think that anyone with a tan is mexican too, go figure." Now, Tijuana I never been there but I have been to many parts of Mexico which aren't pretty. From what I have seen on tv and from what I heard it is like Miami and is beatiful.

But you know what? Don't go to mexico, stay far away. We don't want people like you there anyway, ruining it for the rest of us, demanding pizzas and hamburgers.

From this post you wrote like you actually are Mexican. I love all sorts of Mexican foods, it is my favorite type of food. I especially love Tacos.
