Milbank used *'s quote to the Amish!!!!
A DUer said they sent the quote to Milbank. Maybe it'll get picked up by Begala or someone on TV.

The Misquotable Bush

"I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn't do my job."

-- statement attributed to President Bush in the Lancaster (Pa.) New Era from a private meeting with Amish families on July 9. The White House said Bush said no such thing.

It's at the end

Thanks for posting this! He followed up on it and even checked it out. So the WH calls the Amish liars. Huh.

Here's the article and the sources are mentioned-

snip>
Sam Stoltzfus, an Old Order historian and writer who lives in Gordonville, spoke with a number of people present at the session with the president.

He related what happened to the Scribbler, saying the Amish caught Bushs heart.
...

The president commented on the appearance of Amish farms, and an Amish man spoke apologetically about how he and his friends were not expecting to see the president and were wearing soiled work clothes. Bush said he did not mind that.

Another man remarked that he has twin daughters, as does Bush. The man said one of his twins had dreamed the night before that she was shaking hands with the president and now she actually had done that.

One of the young girls wanted to give Bush a whoopie pie cookie, Stoltzfus says. Bush declined it. The Secret Service man took it, as presidents arent supposed to eat untested food.

At the end of the session, Bush reportedly told the group, I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldnt do my job.

As the president left the room, one Amish man wished him good luck in November.

The Amish group headed back to their farms and shops, reports Stoltzfus. Mothers took their children home for a nap and went back to their sewing and gardens.

3. The White House is denying it
because it was unrecorded. A local newspaper columnist printed it.

This is on DU somewhere.....I'd been looking for it on LBN today. I'd wager he DID say it. It was talked about on a local talk station here in Phoenix today. The host pretty much read the article verbatim (found at http://www.lancasteronline.com/pages/news/local/4/7565.... don't know how to link) and I was appalled and pleased all at once. I thought, "Now maybe everyone will see how nuts this man is."

He sounds like a friggin' preacher and a bad one at that.

On edit: oooh, it links for me. Cool.

7. Here's the column in question
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 10:39 PM by gauguin57
Here's "The Scribbler" column (a popular local-history/local-culture column) in the New Era. Check out the "talkback" comments at the end (Lancaster is SOOOOO conservative, but the comments at the end of this story (and the story on the protesters who greeted Bushie along the campaign bus route) have been very Bush-bashing/liberal.

Bush quietly meets with Amish here; they offer their prayers

http://www.lancasteronline.com/pages/news/local/4/7565

I happen to know that, while the New Era is the editorially conservative paper in Lancaster, Jack Brubaker (the columnist) is more of a libertarian/independent thinker.

(on edit: oops...sorry ...didn't notice the link in above post)
