Big Dawg on the attack, rips some repuke a new one
check out this quote from an article about a conference attended by Bill Clinton:

snip

This turned out to be the pivotal moment of the conference—even the primal one. When Clinton took questions, a young man from a technology company who identified himself as chairman of Bush-Cheney 2004 in California said he was offended by Clinton’s partisanship. To which Clinton, without hesitation, and with some kind of predatory gleam in his eye, said, “Good!” From there, Clinton went on, with emotion and anger, at a level seemingly foreign to most everyone here, to rip to shreds the motives, values, and legitimacy of the Republicans.

It was all anyone could talk about the next day. People seemed genuinely taken aback (some people kept offering that since it was late at night, in a bar, it didn’t quite count) that one of their own might have violated the accepted codes of lofty liberal behavior. There was a little current of fear at the sudden recognition that testosterone could fuel politics. It was a shock, apparently, that we might be this close to real feelings. That politics could actually be personal.

snip

a couple of other choice paragraphs:

Clinton had lost weight and—with a great collection of just-out-of-the-wrapper pastel-colored polo shirts on view throughout the conference—seemed in fabulous form. He was in campaign mode but without the restraints of campaign mode. While there was clear bitterness on his part toward the successor who had rushed “to undo everything I’d done,” and the Republicans who “will run over you unless you beat their brains out,” there was a feisty humor too. Of the disputed Harken oil deal, Clinton said Bush had “sold the stock to buy the baseball team which got him the governorship which got him the presidency.”

Clinton kept referring to the media as (contrary to Kinsley’s view) the “supine” media, pointing out that when Bush insulted Helen Thomas (who, by asking a rough question in the infamous prewar press conference had, Clinton said, “committed the sin of journalism”), no “young journalists” stood up and walked out.

The media, the supine media, was going to have to “go to the meat locker and take out its brains and critical skills.”

Everybody seemed to love this. Clinton was not just the beloved former president, but he had become some sort of sassy oracle.

24. That he shows respect for journalism
true journalism that is, shows A LOT about his character. After what he went through as a result of media dirt digging, it might be easy to carry a generalized grudge. Yet, his mind is more evolved than that.
It's such a horrible shame that so many people cannot grasp what true character is exhibited in this unwillingness to hate. The contrast with the bully who will destroy those who betray him is amazingly stark, yet goes unnoticed.

13. like when he "defended" trent lott
like when he "defended" trent lott from the republicans who criticized him on his strom thurmond birthday comments. clinton's point was that those republicans criticizing lott were doing it to hide their own involvement in denying people the right to vote and engaging in racist politics. that the problem was not just about that one comment lott made, but one of the republican party and especially their "southern strategy". the same point on not ending up only going after bush on that niger uranium issue, but to make sure to go after him on an overall agenda. to hit them in a way where they will have to defend not just one detail, bu ttheir entire agenda. but i'm sure most of us on here knew that all along.

Looking at it today, 2020, I'd swap the Frist scene for the Lott scene in a newyork minute. Less WH, more Senate tradition.

11. I love it!
It's such a difference from when he defended Bush a few weeks ago. I was so disappointed in him, but it's true that he is the toughest fighter in the Democratic Party.

I'd be homocidal if I were him, because he worked so hard, and Bush is just sitting on his ass and signing laws that are unraveling Clinton's entire hard-earned legacy. If Clinton kept doing this instead of being so civil and saintly, I think more Democrats would start speaking out with this kind of conviction. I think the pubbies better watch out if we ever start expressing our anger. They have nothing on a pissed off liberal.

Exactly! And I can't wait to see waves of pissed off liberals pouring out of the woodwork, with the Big Dog (hand-in-hand with our Dem nominee -- Dean, Kerry, Kucinich, Clark, whomever) leading the way!

15. Boom_cha -- Ya Made My Day! This is Great!
Nothing like a passionate brainstorm from the greatest living public figure of our time.

This piece confirms a lot of my cynicism, but also ignites new hope. If anybody can inspire and motivate this crowd, it's Bill Clinton.

It's also a great joy to read the similar sentiments of so many fellow DUers. Hang in there folks! Better days are coming if we keep fighting!

16. There is no doubt
that we will not see the likes of William Jefferson Clinton for many years.

I'm sorry he squandered his gifts, but I still say that there isn't anybody on the horizon who can think on his feet and light up a crowd like Clinton. I today's world that skill translates into instant leadership. For that I will always admire him.

29. I think everyone wishes...
...that "Monica" would have never happened. But, if Bill were any more perfect, he would be Jesus. He's human! I'm glad though, that his weakness was in his personal life...by all rights, it should have only effected him and his family. I truly believe he would have never done anything to knowingly hurt the American people...hell, any people, anywhere. I didn't love everything he did...but I do love him. (I think I made that clear in a previous post!)

27. damn! good stuff!
"committed the sin of journalism." I love it.

Naturally, there will be a raft of lames from the DU left-wing purity contingent slamming Clinton's centrism. Hell, I'm so far to the left of Clinton myself that I can barely recognize us as members of the same party, but I now an intelligent, articulate, charismatic, effective leader when I see one.

We have fallen so far, so fast and so ungracefully since the Coup of 2000 that I can't believe any of the lefty puritans still believe that there is no difference between moderate-conservative Democrats like Clinton and the Repugs.

Nostalgia. Waves of nostalgia.

Don't you just love how partisanship is a BAD thing when the Dems do it, but it's a frickin' VIRTUE when the Pukes do it? Just more hypocrisy. I'm GLAD the clown was offended.

Way to go, Big Dog!
