1. That's today's spin..
Op-ed piece in the LA Times today has a similar theme

=====

Last week, for the fourth year in a row, President Bush declined the NAACP's invitation to speak at its annual convention. Predictably, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume railed that the Bush administration failed to recognize the nation's oldest and largest civil rights group as being significant or important in any way.

The sad thing is, the Bush administration's attitude toward the group is justified.

The NAACP is stuck in a mind-set that worked 30 years ago but makes little sense today. Mfume and NAACP Chairman Julian Bond boast that the organization is committed to "speaking truth to power," continuing the whistle-blowing tradition that the organization was founded upon in 1909. This was urgent in an America where lynching was commonplace and segregation was legal.

11. Right wing conservative
McWhorter, who wrote the article, is just another very conservative African American who has been embraced by the right. He is making a lot of money from his books, articles, and speeches criticizing black people. He is in the mold of Armstrong Williams,Ward Connerly, Walter Williams, Star Parker and other black conservatives.

29. They are a civil rights group
Their full name is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Yes, they were set up mostly to help their own people. However, they have opposed hate & racism--things that do no one any good.

("Colored People" is an old fashioned term; "Black" and "African American" are more recent, although I doubt you've used any of these words.)

6. That is such bullshit.
They accuse the NAACP of using harsh political rhetoric about the President. Well, DUH! He has ignored them for the last 3 years, has fought against affirmative action and his Secretary of Education is a puppet!

KKKarl and the rest of the republican jerks are masters of harsh political rhetoric. They cry like babies when people play the game with the rules they established!

We have admitedly been slow in fighting back but now that we are, he doesn't know what to do! Whine? That is what they accuse the democrats of doing!

I swear, everyday he shows the world what an entitled little spoiled brat he really is! He is a perfect example of why I make my children work around the house. They are entitled to my unconditional love and support, but if they want money, they have to work for it.

7. Excellent point, Literate Tar Heel!
I feel like we have regressed. Any progress that has been made over the past 30+ years is non-existent as a result of * and his ruthless fundies. This kind of arrogance is inexcusable and an embarrassment to anybody with an ounce of intelligence.

14. That is exactly what I was talking about too!
The UN stood up to Bush because they knew he was lying about Iraq! After he bad mouthed the UN and got the WAR the neocons wanted, he ended up crawling back to them and they pretty much told him where to go! The point is the damned fool never learned a damned thing from that mistake! Bush just keeps burning bridges, and they keep coming back to bite him! Like the CIA(Plame)outing case, for example! Even a toddler learns from mistakes, but not the Royal crybaby!

8. Just watched "OutFoxed..."
...and now, when reading threads like this, I can picture the memo that was sent out to the newsroom staff with right-wing talking points (such as this crap)...

Fox Internal Memo
Date
7/15/2004

From
Moody

Due to the lack of reverence on the part of the so-called NAACP for our Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, we will no longer have any black people anywhere at Fox or NewsCorp. This means "Carl" and "Dr Julius Hibbert" on The Simpsons will be replaced by "Cletus" and "Dr Nick Riviera."

cc: human resources - please cut Hibbert and Carl severance checks...

24. NAACP is NOT important anymore-Black votes don't get counted!!
Shitty voting machines, long lines, poll harassment, etc., means that only a low percentage of Black votes get counted. Why bother dealing with a group whose votes don't count?
