I'm actually getting sick of the phrase "values" or "family values"...
Was listening to Mit Romney at the National Press Club luncheon today (via Minnesota Public Radio), and of course he's spouting the repub's BS and when he and others, and now even JK discuss family values, or values I just start to cringe. Isn't there some other term that means the same thing that JK can start using??? I'm actually sick of hearing about values. :(

2. Why change the term?
Why doesn't moveon.org or the DNC just run a family values ad based on all the right-wing family values "mishaps"?

3. Welcome to DU
:hi:

You're only now getting sick of it? You have a lot more patience than I do.

We ought to be calling them "sexual mores," which they are. They aren't family values.

4. Yeah, almost as sick as I am of "patriotism"
These idiots have taken traditionally good and meaningful words and made them something ugly.

5. You are just now getting sick of the phrase?
I was tired of it when Reagan used it. I've always wondered what it means? Divorce? Hating your kids? Racism? Families in poverty? Increasing those who have no homes, health care, decent schools. Those are Republican family values.

11. Excellent question.
I hear all about family values, but what, specifically, are family values? I'll bet nobody even knows. Mom? Apple pie? I think the Gores' books made an excellent point that in this country, family values can mean just about anything. If you look at the private life of certain leading Republicans, it means misogyny, adultery, soul crushing control, neat stuff like that. If this campaign is going to be a debate on family values, we need to define the term.

I want government support for eating pizza and watching movies on Sunday afternoons.

6. Feeding your family on one income doesn't seem to be a family value
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 02:13 PM by nothingshocksmeanymo
Taking children from gay parents while leaving them in abusive homes with fundamental religious abuse (only the really nutcase ones) doesn't seem to be a family value.

Making sure every child in America has health insurance doesn't seem to be a family value.

Dumping debt on future generations at the speed of the Concord doesn't seem to be a family value.

I think it is right for JK to turn that one on them.

7. What "family values" means in politics today
is "anti-gay". It's the latest euphemism.

10. I told another fellow DUer to be prepared...
Just the other day in a discussion on this board, I told someone to get ready for the onslaught of that single word "values". I admonished that they would be sick of it before this was all over. Looks like others are getting the syrup poisoning too! :puke:

12. After all these years of abusing the term
I would really love for the Repubs to explain what so-called "family values" have to do with governance. I'd like to know.

Oh and you can expect to hear them scream "liberal" every chance they get as well. I remember as a young pup working in TV in DC in 1988 listening to Atwater and the like getting this meme out. Finally, I went up to our political reporter and asked why Dukakis, when confronted with this label, didn't just list the things he believed in and admitted that if that made him a liberal, then so be it. She didn't have an answer.
