I play cards monthly with a group of friends who are very conservative and love the GOP.
Normally we do not have political discussions because they know I am liberal and very passionate about my beliefs. (In the past when we have slipped into political discussions things have gotten very nasty.)
Well, we had a game last night and we were talking about the normal things, work, kids, spouses, etc. Then the topic of Iraq and Fahrenheit 911 came up. One friend asked what the movie was supposed to be about. I explained that the film was a documentary that showed * admin, the election controversy, his activities on 9/11, the other side of the Iraq war that the press hasn’t shown us, all that I knew about it since I haven’t seen it yet. (The only theater in my state showing it is approx. 6 hours away. I intend to go to it at a theater in a neighboring state, but that is 90 miles away, so I have to plan it.)
From there they let me talk and they asked questions. We had a good, calm discussion about politics. One friend said that the 2nd beheading of an American was enough for them, Iraq was out of control. Another questioned how Kerry would be any different.
I simply explained that our nation has no credibility as long as * and his administration remain in power. I pointed out the demonstrations in Ireland and how * was the first U.S. president in 100 years that was not welcomed by the Irish people. They had not heard about the demonstrations so that lead to a discussion of the manipulation of the press and how, imho, * & Co., were only feeding the press what they want us to hear and if anyone steps out of bounds they lose their job or access to the admin. I then told them about the Irish reporter and how * has filed a complaint against her because she dared to question him.
I asked them to recall the t.v. coverage during the Vietnam war and asked them if they did not find it odd that they saw no such coverage of the Iraq war. They agreed and asked why this was and I told them that *&Co. do not want us to see the horrors of war. I told them that it is estimated that 50,000 Iraqi civilians have died in the war. I told them that the torture at the prisons was more than naked detainees with panties on their heads, that it included rapes, beatings, toe nail pullings, electrocution and deaths.
Again, how will Kerry make a difference? I told them that a new administration has a better shot at getting UN and NATO assistance with the situation in Iraq and other support that is necessary for our nation. Since * lied about WMDs and the AQ/SH connection, no one trusts us anymore. In fact we are feared and military build up in other nations have increased just in case we go wacky in our efforts for world domination.
The conversation switched to the economy and I asked them “Are you better off today than you were 4 years ago?” They agreed they were not. I asked them if their tax rebates were a wash with the increase in state/local/property taxes and they said yes. I pointed out that the federal support of state programs or social programs have resulted in decreased state budgets which then trickle down to an increase of municipal and local taxes. It really raised eyebrows when I asked them if they knew that anyone making over $85,000.00 pays no FICA. One of my friends does the company's payroll and for the first time, realized this fact and said they had never paid attention to it but I was right. I simply said that those who can afford to pay taxes are not required to under *.
Well, after it was all said and done, the card game was very successful, not only did I have most of the winning hands that night, I may have converted some repugs to vote for Kerry.
Once Fahrenheit 911 is available on DVD and I get them all a copy, I know that they will not vote for Bush.
Thanks for letting me rank and rave on about this.
