"Fahrenheit 9/11" benefited from a flurry of praise and condemnation. Supporters mobilized liberal-minded audiences to see it over opening weekend to counter efforts by some right-wing groups to discredit the film.
"It always helps when there's a group out there that says, 'Don't go see this movie. It's bad for you,'" said Jonathan Sehring, president of IFC Films, one of the film's distributors.
================
my partner and I saw it yesterday. We went to a 5:15pm showing. There weren't many empty seats.
We had to stand in line to wait for the theater to be cleared out from the earlier showing. The crowd that lined up was a mixed group of ages -- from seniors on down to college students.
Overheard comments while standing in line ranged from discussing news stories surrounding the film to speculation as to what and how the film would depict bush*'s role.
During the film - there was frequent laughter at some of the clips of bush*, gasps/moans at some of the segments, and whispered mutters of "...that f*!ker..." A woman sitting next to me poked her husband frequently..."see I told you it was about oil.." and "...what an a$$hole.."
Laughter filled the theater at the last clip of bush* when he tried to say the "fool me once.." cliche. at the end of the film there was dead silence for a few seconds, then the crowd burst into applause.
Heading out of the theater we overheard comments such as "...he's soooo dumb...", "...gotta kick his butt out of there...", "..if he gets in again we are so screwed..." and "...come Monday, I'll be switching parties to Democrat.."
on edit:
p.s. my partner, who considers herself a political agnostic, has tolerated the last 4 years of my ranting and raving.
Knowing how she feels about (or use to feel) about my ranting and raving, I was trying to figure out how to get her to come with me to see the movie. Too my surprise -- she told me that we had to go see it.
I have seen a bit of a change in her interest- in the past couple of months she has taken to printing out articles regarding bush* or calling me at work to tell me the numbers on one on-line poll or another. she now yells at the TV, screams at the radio, and mutter words that the FCC have banned at bumper stickers.
as we were leaving the theater she said "...every American should be made to sit down and watch this movie before they vote..."
