Poll question: is al gore an asset or a liability right now?
Edited on Thu Jun-24-04 06:07 PM by thebigmansentme
it could easily be argued either way. on one hand he makes kerry seem more moderate and presidential, with his wild speeches, and he also attacks bush the way kerry can't. on the downside he steals the spotlight from kerry, and could be an embarassment to democrats as a whole with some of his outbursts.

p.s. what the hell happened to that robot that played gore for the last 10 years while real al was on vacation ?!!!

1. Please don't start another of these threads. Gore is a national treasure.
Leave him alone, and let him speak his anger.

9. look i love al gore now
but you gotta admit that some of his recent speeches, while being true and hilarious at the same time, are not exactly 'presidential' material, and there is a question of how that will play with independent voters, if there is a danger in that

8. "Wild speeches"?
Care to give an example? Yes, 30 minutes into a 35 minute speech, he got rather exercised (which is, naturally, all the "librul" media saw fit to broadcast), but a little passion now and then is relished by the best of men.

Perhaps you mean "wild" in the sense of off-target, or outlandish? It would be good of you to cite passages that you think are "wild."

Or are you just throwing words around?

bush is a nutcase and gore is not. we are not discussing what is true here, we are discussing the media perception that shapes the campaign battle for kerry. so the truth is really irrelevant, especially where media gets involved, that's the reality. why do i even need to explain this to you?

41. Oh, please.
First of all, why must you be so demeaning in your posts? You're acting as though you're the only guy in on some kind of big super-secret, and you're telling all of us the way it is, and the way it's gonna be.

I reject that notion on its face.

Media perception really doesn't concern me anymore. Kerry continues to hold his own in the polls, even surpassing Bush in unexpected ways, on issues like terrorism, and trustworthiness. All this "Re-Goreing" of Gore, and Kerry's climbing. As much as the Republican-types try to cram "Craaaazy Gore" down the nation's throats, nobody's really buying it, or making any kind of connection from Gore to Kerry. You only see "Craaaaazy Gore" on Fox anyway; the network news outlets really aren't interested in Goreing him again, frankly.

I, for one, am interested in the truth of what the man says. He's an incredibly relevant American political figure, and he's doing a smash-up job of lecturing the President. You'll likely continue to insist that we're all silly and media perception is everything and we're foolishly blowing it off, but that opinion won't play out factually. Have you seen the polls?

Could you please elaborate on what you mean by "wild"? I called Gore passionate, because that's what the tail end of his speech was. You've said that he's made "wild speeches," a characterization that I found wanting. And then you failed to back up your point, instead choosing to insult me.

Someone's certainly making wild speeches; I don't think it's Al Gore, though.

Or are you saying that Democrats should eschew all passion and emotion because some news outlet "might" misuse the video?

I'm not asking you to do my homework, either; I'm asking you to back up your assertion that Gore was making "wild speeches." If you can't do that, I understand; people spout off all the time without the facts to back them up. Just go ahead and admit that you didn't know what you were talking about.

Let me tell you why I think you posted your original remarks that started this thread tonight. Here's a hint, it has NOTHING to do engaging in an honest open discussion, and has EVERYTHING to do with slamming Al Gore and insulting anyone that dared to diagree with your comments.

And speaking of "psycho", wasn't it you that started the name-calling in this thread? How did you think people here were going to respond to that kind of nonsense?

79. Gore's worst moment in his speeches
was nowhere near as nasty, underhanded, or slimy as the "pessimism" web-ad showing right now at www.georgewbush.com.

I will bet that if you took 100 people and showed them the pessimism ad, and then randomly took any one minute of Gore's "Craaaazzzzy" speech, 75 of those people would be saying, "Holy shit! How could anyone have voted for that illiterate Texan recto-cranial inversion?"

The media can twist things, true. Who cares? Do what is right and at the end of the day you will sleep in peace. Al Gore doesn't have the prospect of answering to 1/1000th of what the Chimp will have to account for at judgment day. (Maybe you don't believe that. Maybe Chimpo doesn't believe it. But you better believe his supporters mostly believe it!)

Sleep tight, Chimpster. Pleasant fucking dreams.

...one another by making fun of his performance"? You do know that the mainstream media is owned by major conservative corporations, don't you. Do I need to mail you a "thinking cap"?

And no, Gore's speeches aren't hurting the Democrats at all. Did you ever think that the NeoCons are trying desperately to figure out a way to respond to Gore's attacks? Did you ever think that Gore is not only helping to energize the Democratic Party, but that he is also starting to convince the fence-sitters that FratBoy must go?

Sure, the continued "Goreing" pleases the lathered-up Free-Republic-reading Drudge-worshipping Bush-lovers to no end, but honestly, nobody else is paying any damned attention.

Every time Gore questions Bush, he gets TV coverage. The mainstream news channels (ABC, NBC, CBS) report his speeches, but they refrain from making silly, non-newsworthy comments about Gore's alleged "craaaazy" behavior. It's just fodder for Rush, Fox, and Bush's own campaign website.

Please just turn away from this kind of garbage. I swear to you, Kerry's not hurting one little bit. :D

Of course, it depends on what your definition of "pickle" is, I suppose.

To be fair, no one knew what the hell Clinton meant by that statement. There was a spot on the local news about it, and the pickle industry refused to comment. Smart of them, I thought.

64. Oh, brother. Not only are you rude and insulting, you don't appear to...
...have been paying ANY attention since Clinton became President for the first time in 1992. The term "NeoCon" has been used to describe a faction of the GOP rightwing since that point in time.

By the way, are you aware the Clinton was our last legally elected President?

then again, i didn't pay that much attention to politics before this election, which i am sure is true for many people.

i couldn't care less if bush was elected legally or illegally, he is still an asshole.

70. The fact that you haven't done your homework before engaging in a...
...discussion about a topic about which you know nothing is very telling to me.

And no, most people do pay attention to politics. People like you can't be bothered unless it gives you a chance to insult posters on a message board.

Go home. Do some homework. Quit wasting DU's time.

48. there was a good point brought up
One can express moral indignation, without looking like an "angry man", which is what media is turning gore into, unless you are deaf and blind. but as somebody else just said, he is not running for anything, so that may not be such a bad thing after all. i am actually not trying to bash anybody, i just asked a simple question...

some experts from gore's speech today, very good stuff btw

Symbolically, President Bush has been attempting to conflate his commander-in-chief role and his head of government role to maximize the power people are eager to give those who promise to defend them against active threats. But as he does so, we are witnessing some serious erosion of the checks and balances that have always maintained a healthy democracy in America.

I am convinced that our founders would counsel us today that the greatest challenge facing our republic is not terrorism but how we react to terrorism, and not war, but how we manage our fears and achieve security without losing our freedom. I am also convinced that they would warn us that democracy itself is in grave danger if we allow any president to use his role as commander in chief to rupture the careful balance between the executive, the legislative and the judicial branches of government. Our current president has gone to war and has come back into "the city" and declared that our nation is now in a permanent state of war, which he says justifies his reinterpretation of the Constitution in ways that increase his personal power at the expense of Congress, the courts, and every individual citizen.

A little over a year ago, when we launched the war against this second country, Iraq, President Bush repeatedly gave our people the clear impression that Iraq was an ally and partner to the terrorist group that attacked us, al Qaeda, and not only provided a geographic base for them but was also close to providing them weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear bombs. But now the extensive independent investigation by the bipartisan commission formed to study the 9/11 attacks has just reported that there was no meaningful relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda of any kind. And, of course, over the course of this past year we had previously found out that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
So now, the President and the Vice President are arguing with this commission, and they are insisting that the commission is wrong and they are right, and that there actually was a working co-operation between Iraq and al Qaeda.

The problem for the President is that he doesn’t have any credible evidence to support his claim, and yet, in spite of that, he persists in making that claim vigorously. So I would like to pause for a moment to address the curious question of why President Bush continues to make this claim that most people know is wrong. And I think it’s particularly important because it is closely connected to the questions of constitutional power with which I began this speech, and will profoundly affect how that power is distributed among our three branches of government.

President Bush and Vice President Cheney have decided to fight to the rhetorical death over whether or not there’s a meaningful connection between Iraq and al Qaeda. They think that if they lose that argument and people see the truth, then they’ll not only lose support for the controversial decision to go to war, but also lose some of the new power they’ve picked up from the Congress and the courts, and face harsh political consequences at the hands of the American people. As a result, President Bush is now intentionally misleading the American people by continuing to aggressively and brazenly assert a linkage between al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein.

If he is not lying, if they genuinely believe that, that makes them unfit in battle with al Qaeda. If they believe these flimsy scraps, then who would want them in charge? Are they too dishonest or too gullible? Take your pick.

The Administration works closely with a network of "rapid response" digital Brown Shirts who work to pressure reporters and their editors for "undermining support for our troops." Paul Krugman, the New York Times columnist, was one of the first journalists to regularly expose the President’s consistent distortions of the facts. Krugman writes, "Let’s not overlook the role of intimidation. After 9/11, if you were thinking of saying anything negative of the President…you had to expect right-wing pundits and publications to do all they could to ruin your reputation.
Bush and Cheney are spreading purposeful confusion while punishing reporters who stand in the way. It is understandably difficult for reporters and journalistic institutions to resist this pressure, which, in the case of individual journalists, threatens their livelihoods, and in the case of the broadcasters can lead to other forms of economic retribution. But resist they must, because without a press able to report "without fear or favor" our democracy will disappear.

This administration has not been content just to reduce the Congress to subservience. It has also engaged in unprecedented secrecy, denying the American people access to crucial information with which they might hold government officials accountable for their actions, and a systematic effort to manipulate and intimidate the media into presenting a more favorable image of the Administration to the American people.

49. The Al Gore stategy: Fire up the base and draw fire from Kerry
Edited on Thu Jun-24-04 06:39 PM by Nikki Stone 1
Taking the question at face value, Gore is an absolutely essential part of the Democratic strategy right now. He has two major functions.

1. To fire up the base, especially the left (anti-war) base which is furious at Bush but wary of Kerry. This group might vote for Nader if they do not feel that the party is addressing them. (For the same reason, we will soon see Howard Dean on the talk circuit.)

Al Gore is the Tom McClintock of the 2004 election. For non-Californians, Mc Clintock is a neocon in state government who ran against Governor Gray Davis during the California recall in 2003. Ahnold (ie. Governor Groper) was the Republican choice because he is moderate to liberal on social issues while being fiscally conservative. This is the only kind of Republican who can pull the Democratic vote and win the governorship. But Ahnold turned off the neocons, and the neocon vote was essential for the GOP win. McClintock's candidacy insured that the neocon voters would turn out on election day and not just decide to stay home. At the last minute, McClintock told his neocon base to vote for Ahnold, just to get Gray Davis out. The strategy worked.

2. To act as a decoy and draw fire away from Kerry. Neocon talk shows (like Rush Limbaugh and FAUX "News") gain much of their fodder from events they can poke fun at. A "ranting" Al Gore (and Howard Dean) provide a focus for the vultures in the right wing media. Since Gore is not running for office, it doesn't much matter how much Rush focuses on him. And despite himself, Rush WILL focus on him--first, because he is part of the Clinton menage and second, because a ranting Al Gore is just too damned funny for Rush to ignore. Gore draws the bullets away from Kerry and provides a decoy, a diversion, an energy waster.

That's my two cents. Al Gore is an integral part of the process.

This strategy doesn't work anymore...the one where you play on Democrats' fear of being perceived as too "scary" for the mainstream. We're NOT going to back down...we're going to own it and stand up to snakes who try to spin it into something that it's not.

92. kerry supporters have mixed feelings
looked around on kerry official site forum, some bad, some good

OK , its about time for ANGERY AL to take a vacation. Come post 4th of july, all media attention should be on kerry and his veep pick

I agree. Al Gore should put away his sour grapes and let us focus on electing Senator Kerry. Senator Kerry is the future. Al Gore is some relic of the cold war.

Al Gore has become a caricature of a fired-up candidate. He should've taken the "little blue pill" 4 years ago. His outbursts, while well intentioned, are a wee bit embarrassing.

******YAWN****** no one cares what al gore says. the timing for him to gain some cahojones has passed....he just looks stupid now...

Gore is saying what Kerry cannot...he is our conscience.

I think Al is an asset to all of us...and yes, to Kerry.....without much further elaboration, I wouldn't call him wild...I'd call him impassioned and for good cause.

The NEW Al Gore makes us "Hawks" stand tall, and proud. We need MORE Al Gores of 2004 out on the stump.

NICE GUYS FINISH LAST...ask Al Gore.

Maybe Al is doing what he should have done (before it was too late) the last time round....

A man walks down the street; he says, why am I soft in the middle, now,
Why am I soft in the middle, now, when the rest of my life's so hard..."

WE CAN CALL HIM AL! And that's a great thing.

Be passionate. Tell the truth.
Honestly, we're buying into the rightwing spin, if we choose to confuse a leader's passion for the issues (Al Gore, Howard Dean, Michael Moore), with a person who is a blabbering fool (Bushit, O'liely, Limbutt). America knows the difference. Don't let the wingnuts blur it.

And he knows exactly what he's doing for the reasons you mentioned. Kerry doesn't need any more spotlight. Gore says the things Kerry can't. Just like Moveon and Howard Dean are.

Damnit! We should be kicking ourselves for not putting this man in the White House when we had the chance.

Al Gore is good for America.
