Hmm, Kerry and Edwards in private meeting today
AP is reporting Kerry and Edwards met in the President's Room off the Senate floor late this afternoon... CNN spoke with an Edwards aide who did not deny the story, saying "They were both in Washington."

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. John Kerry held a brief, secretive
meeting with potential running mate John Edwards on Tuesday, a
spur-of-the-moment session that symbolized an unusual day of hurry
up-and-wait in the heavily scripted life of the Democratic
presidential candidate.
The two men met in the President's Room, whether they knew the
name or not, an ornate sitting room just off the Senate chamber,
and they declined to speak with reporters afterward. While the
brevity of the session indicated it was less than a full-fledged
vice presidential interview, it came roughly a month before the
opening of the Democratic National Convention, and at a time when
Edwards is frequently mentioned as a potential running mate.
"Sen. Kerry has made clear that he wants that whole process to
be quiet and confidential, which I think is the correct way to do
it," Edwards told reporters during the day. "Because of that I'm
silent."

2. But what does Edwards bring to the ticket? Can he deliver NC?
I don't know how much clout a rich trial lawyer will have in the south.

9. It's so surreal that he is fifty-one
He looks about thirty-nine. Clinton and Gore were both younger than he, I believe, in 1992.

24. also mentioned by the media
is that Edwards has a "positive message", which could help, since the right-wing media likes to portray Kerry as being "too negative".

6. Yes he can give us a 50/50 shot at NC, according to the last poll
which is pretty amazing. I also assume he'd help alot in both Virginia and West Virginia.

7. When I hear and see Edwards, I see more than a little Bill Clinton
He is charming, charismatic, youthful, energetic, has a broad-based populist message. I am no big fan of Kerry's. I will vote for him, hands down, come November. Edwards would make it a much more palatable vote to cast. That is if Florida doesn't decide my name is too much like a felon's and bump me off the rolls.

I can imagine the man Edwards in the VP debates. Young, handsome, forward thinking Edwards up against the dour, gloomy, used up CrashCart. A floor mopping good time would be had by all.

12. Regarding the trial lawyer (non)issue,
Keep in mind that this trial lawyer kicked Lauch Faircloth's ass out of DC, against one of the most experienced smear machines in politics. If Lauch and his good friend and ally, Jesse (Helms, that is) couldn't hurt him with it, I doubt Karl & Kompany can. Granted, swimming pool manufacturers may not vote for him....

As for what he brings to the ticket, see the previous replies to your post.

18. He brings a sense of connection to rural americans...
Regardless of how much money he has made (Helping families who've lost loved ones in terrible malpractice cases) he still had the exact same upbringing that many people experienced in their own lives. His father was a mill worker. His mother worked for the postal union. He still lives in a $200,000 home. He didn't get into politics because it was handed to him owing to his family.

That's not something Bush, Cheney, or even Kerry can say. They were all children of the upper-class, expected and pushed from a young age to be in positions of power.

He plays really well in rural areas of key swing states. That's what he brings. Not to say other candidates don't bring good things.

22. The "rich trial lawyer" angle is
pure right-wing smear. The guy may be rich, but he wasn't born with a silver spoon. I think that particular line is going to be something akin to Kerry's protesting the vietnam war.. it may make for a nice, condensed hate-Meme over at freerepublic, but if anyone actually delves into the underlying issues, it becomes harder and harder to sustain that particular line of criticism. The Vietnam war was indefensible, and Kerry had every right to protest to try to end it, especially because he had seen it firsthand. Likewise, I think most Americans, once they get past the "trial lawyer" rhetoric, will agree that someone who gets maimed or crippled by a negligent corporation deserves to have some recourse to the law. I'd like to see Bush and Cheney defend their record of obscene Corporate Cronyism against a "trial lawyer" who made his mark fighting corporations. From what I've seen, Edwards is very good at cogently explaining his passion for sticking up for the little guy.

I think he's the obvious, no-brainer choice, and I think A Kerry-Edwards Ticket will be solid, balanced, and hard to beat.

i think edwards' comment is interesting:

"Sen. Kerry has made clear that he wants that whole process to be quiet and confidential, which I think is the correct way to do it," Edwards told reporters during the day. "Because of that I'm silent."

The meeting came on an unusual day for Kerry -- one spent in the Capitol.
