I am the Infamous HiggsBoson
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 07:47 PM by BigBang
Also known as: Cointelpro_Papers, Anti-flag, Zarathustra, ThusSpokeZarathustra, Against ME, FEqualsMA, Liberal_Manifesto, and a few other accounts still running. Together I have racked up about 10,000 posts, these were just the accounts I could remember off the top of my head.

I guess what I wanted to say, is that I have never been kicked off this site for a valid reason, except for when I was HiggsBoson, and even then, a truly liberal site would not ban me for making an observation about religion.

This forum is a great place to be, that's why I keep coming back, but there are a few observations that I would like to point out.

For one, many people here are not liberal, and are not rational. They will attack you because your opinion is different, even if it is the liberal veiw. They will demonize you before they would come up with a rational argument, and it seems that the moderators just do what the mob wants them to do. Many of the posts I have posted here, I have poster on other forums, and I was not banned on them, so this leads me to believe that there is a fundamental flaw with the way this place is ran.

Secondly, people on this forum will not take you for face value, they view you as an enemy(don't deny this). They are combative if your veiw is different, and will turn the whole debate into a personal matter, that is irrelevant to the discussion. I have been banned several times because this has happened. It seems to me that this site, discusses liberal ideas, but the people discussing them are not liberal at all. There is a certain dispostion that most liberals have when interacting with others, and when arguing, and few possess it on this forum.

With this said, everyone will probably just dismiss me as a dogmatic asshole, that deserves to be kicked off again. But I defy everyone on here to make a valid argument for kicking me off. Some may say the way I express myself when dealing with religion is uncuth, but to them I say, I have never slandered anyone, I have never used profanit;y, and I have never started a personal attack war. I express my views in the best way I know, and I am kicked off a Liberal Forum for it.

The moderators seem to be so afraid of disrupters, and freepers, that they do not know a liberal when they see one. The correlate new ideas with disruption, and unique ideas with bigotry. Isn't the point of expressing an opinion on this forum, bigoted or not, to havep people teach you, and agree with you. To come to a mutualy understanding that everyone can appreciate? Instead, there is one understanding, and if you do not agree you are filth. I think the moderators need to rethink what the word liberal means. It is more than ideas, it is acceptance of everything, and everyone, even if to you they seem like a bigot.

I suggest everyone heed to the ideas of Thomas Aquinas, if your faith, and veiwpoints are so weak, that they cannot take seeing contradictory views, than it really isn't faith or a rellivant veiwpoint in the first place.

-on edit-

I see my many typoes, but for the sake of consistancy, I will not edit them

1. I have, frankly, never heard of you
But after over two years here, I have great faith in the owners and moderators. I have watched them do what they do day in and day out. If you were banned repeatedly, there was a good reason for it.

Zombies suck.

14. There are some important differences between this board and others.
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 08:10 PM by Merlin
This is not to comment on your being kicked off. I have not idea what the facts are on that. Seems to me I have a favorable impression of Zarathustra.

I agree with Will Pitt that in general this board has proven itself to be well run, and thus worthy of support.

You are up against a couple of things.

First, it's true the liberals on this board are--generally--unlike other liberals. They (we) are fighters, political activists, non-naive, pissed off and determined to change the politics of this country. Many others with liberal views, on the other hand, seek to avoid conflict and are averse to political involvement.

Second, this is a board devoted to the principal of winning Democratic victories at all levels of our government. So it is that issues which are profoundly divisive have been deemed inadmissable. I, too have questioned this policy at times--particularly on the prohibitions against I/P discussions anwhere except on the FP forum. But, in fairness, there is some healthy rationale to this policy.

The important thing is that the purpose of DU is not to provide a forum for everybody to spout off his or her own views. It is to provide a forum where views can be exchanged with the goal of helping to find common ground so as to make us stronger as a political force.

Our purpose must be to seek consensus, not division. When we disagree, we are honor bound to hear and understand the other's position, to seek points of common agreement, and to be ready to give ground where necessary to achieve that degree of harmony needed to further our mutual political objectives.

16. The reason for the resistance to religious debate
Is this is not a religious debate forum. Religion may play a part in our society and politics but attempting to thrash out the eternal verities. You can discuss religion but it has to be done with respect to our fellow DUers. A direct assault on a person's religion here is not going to serve you or your target in any way. In fact it is going to drive people away not only from you but from this forum and possibly even the progressive movement. You do know that the right loves to point out the intolerance of the left. Its best not to give them any more fuel than is necissary.

I see that you site rational thought as a valued trait. Perhaps applying some thought to the nature of how religious belief is ingrained on peoples minds and what it takes to lose it. Have you ever told someone they are foolish for believing in god and had them give up their belief because you argued them out of it? Thats not how the human mind works.

Belief takes time to build. It takes time to erode. There are ways to guide people to new beliefs but direct assaults that are radically different from their current beliefs simply do not work. You need to build trust and relationships with people to allow their minds to grow to accept new ideas and beliefs.

I understand the desire to try to get people to open their eyes and see the world as you see it. This is the desire of most people. This again is human nature. We naturally try to spread our own collection of ideas and beliefs. We wish to surround ourselves with people who have the same priorities as we do. Various processes of thought vye for attention in our world and strive to drive each other out. The trick is to find a way to locate those ideas that you share with other people and work on those rather than focusing on the things you differ on. This is how a complex pluralistic society can function. This is how we learn to get along with each other and hopefully learn things from each other.
