"The great lie of the 2004 election campaign is Iraq." (Australia)
PM stirs terrorist hornets
by Kevin Rudd. Australian Opposition Spokesman: Foreign Affairs

"THE great lie of the 2001 election campaign was children overboard. The great lie of the 2004 election campaign is Iraq.

It's not just the Howard Government's claim that the Iraq war was necessary to eliminate Iraq's stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons. It's not just the Government's pre-war claim that there would be no post-war military role for Australia. And it's not just the Government's claim that Government officials had no knowledge of allegations of prisoner abuse in Iraq during the course of last year.
No, the big new lie advanced on Iraq is the Government's extraordinary claim last Friday that the Opposition's policy on Iraq would result in an increased Jemaah Islamiah threat to Australians here in our own region.

This is John Howard at his Orwellian worst. Trying desperately to convince people that black is white – and that white is black."

<snip>

"The Prime Minister's problem is that this entire argument came apart last week when the September 11 inquiry concluded there was "no credible evidence" that Iraq was involved with al-Qa'ida's September 11 attacks on the US."
