Help me keep my mouth shut, * supporters over cube wall
Trashing the MM 911 film. "It isn't a documentary, it's one person's opinion, blah, blah, blah." I wanted to get into it with them, but it would not have been wise in a career sense. How can intelligent people be so fucking stupid?? They are both salespeople, so they of course worship the almighty dollar. So, I guess to them it makes sense, but give me a break.

15. That was my first thought
Lay it on thick: Where was it playing? Was it a sneak preview? How did you find out about it? What scenes did you really object to? What lies did he tell?

Oh. You just listened to some guy on the radio. Did he see it? What specifically did he find to object to?

Oh. He didn't see it either.

Gee, you guys are repeating the word of some guy who doesn't know any more about it than you do. OK. Later.

You can do stuff like this without revealing a thing about your own politics. It drives them even nuttier than they already are.

2. tell them all documentaries have a point of view
That is why people make documentaries. Than ask them if they have seen the movie and what facts they have to dispute anything Moore put in the movie? From what I have heard the film footage speaks for itself.

Let 'em keep their heads in the sand. There won't be too many left down there after this movie comes out, so they'll be quite comfortable together. :-)

26. This is one reason I love DU. I just found out that someone,
somewhere is going bananas in a cube because of moronic conversations in cubes beyond. How many millions are enduring the same thing right now? The DU force is with you Losinit so vent here, then knock em dead with cool.

In those situations rather than argue why not just comment on how weird it is for the leader on the world's only superpower to sit stunned when informed America was under attack.

Point out that Bush's attendance at Booker had been announced so by staying in the classroom, Bush was placing all those children at risk. The police and I assume the Secret Service were aware that the previous evening a Muslim man reported to police that an Arab in Sarasota was threatening to kill Bush.

Then point them to Paul Thompson 911 Timeline compiled solely from mainstream news sources.

11. Just Curious...
How can you "get into it with them" when you haven't (I assume since it hasn't been released) seen it either. Perhaps the movie is a big turd, we don't know yet. After you see the film, prepare a list of talking points, then calmly address them, but make sure that you have a fire extinguisher handy as for I'm sure by your calm delivery their hair will burn.

Like of DimSon sitting in the classroom. Or the "now watch this drive comment?". No I haven't seen the film yet, but I have been aware of these situations since they happened, thanks to DU.

It's more like rehash, because we've been following these developments since September 12, 2001, honestly.

14. I agree with mmonk
How can you bash something you haven't even seen?

Maybe you can say "I didn't know that it is already running!?" or ask "how were you able to see it already?." If they say they have't seen it, just ask them if they've read the Fox News review calling it "brilliant"

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,122678,00.html

"A really brilliant piece of work, and a film that members of all political parties should see without fail."

" ... a tribute to patriotism, to the American sense of duty..."

I think Fox News is currently down, but I was more than suprised to read an extremely positive review of Fahrenheit 9/11 on Fox.

I was at a family reunion of sorts and was watching Michael Moore being interviewed on TV and some of my relatives were saying the EXACT same thing, "It's only one persons opinion, it's not fact".

I had to do everthing in my power to hold my tongue and not start a family feud.

32. I disagree. Don't loose your temper at work. However, it's so incredibly
important for democracy that people should be able to talk politics at work.

Just think of the power of saying something pithy and funny and true to these people.

It's very important to be a little Johnny Apple Seed of truth. They're planting their weeds. You're entitled to plant your trees of knowledge.

Just do it without losing your temper, and do it intelligently.

Obviously the meme is "it's just his opinion." And the point is, documentaries are all just opinions. And he's entiteld to his. We've heard the Republican's opininon for a while, no it's time to here some others so that the pulbic can decide for themselves whose to believe.

25. Last fall I took a part-time
job and ended up in a small department working in close proximity to three of the dumbest freepers in the country. These morons listen to Rush in the am and Hannity in the afternoon. For a while I did the "bullshit" cough maybe 50 times a day. Then I got a small walkman to drown it out.

It would be useless to argue with these idiots because their brains have all but died from extreme overexposure to RW lies. I just pity them.

If it wasn't for the extreme part-time nature of the job and the fact
that I'll be leaving shortly anyway, I would have filed a formal complaint long ago.

It is definitely a "hostile" place to work.

Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 10:51 AM by powergirl
What movie are you talkig about? (act like you have never heard of it)

Why is everyone so upset about it? (Lies about bush will be the answer)

But it's just a movie, right, not a news report, huh?

Well, if it is all lies, then Bush should have no problem proving them wrong and it will work against the Democrats, right?

Can the Republcans make a film about how great Bush is that millions of people will want to pay money to see? Well, there you go!

Keep asking dumbass questions, then they start giving you dumbass answers - it's a great way to amuse yourself - just try not to laugh or they will figure out that you are goofing on them. :)

37. careful
Probably best not to get into it at the workplace. If you want to discuss politics with a work mate it is safer to do it outside the workplace on your own time--ie go out to lunch with one of the cube mates.

Also, take them on one on one--the current situation will enable them to gang up on you. But don't use work time and the work place to discuss--because you could get in trouble--some employers will stand behind you, but some will brand you a trouble maker and this is your job, your livlihood.

38. Play dumb.
Talk to them as though you're on their side (if they don't know your politics already) and then gradually turn the tables on them. Join in with their Moore bashing in some innocuous way. Say that you think he's brash and annoying or something like that. Then once you get chatty with them, go see the film and mention it to them.

Maybe you can come across as someone who went into the film skeptical but curious and came out with some serious concerns. Talk about parts that were powerful or disturbing and avoid getting bogged down in the minutae of discussing various facts and dates with them.

39. ask if they have seen "Panama Deception"
a widely respected DOCUMENTARY that is critical of Bush I...did I say critical? I mean it was a documentary that tells the TRUTH.

Michael Moore is more of a media figure than most documentarians (is that a word?) so he's an easy target. However, just because he is a well-known figure does not mean he can't produce a decent documentary. I thought Bowling for Columbine was great!
