smirk lies about number of stem cells -- Nada, none, zip, zero

NIH Stem Cell Director: Fewer Viable Lines Than Stated by Administration
Reps. Waxman and Slaughter reveal that the Administration may have misinformed the public about both the number of viable human embryonic stem cell lines available for research and the motivation behind the recent dismissal of a distinguished cell biologist from the President’s Council on Bioethics.
- The Letter to the President

-snip-

In May 2003, NIH Director Dr. Elias Zerhouni told Congress that only 11 stem cell lines are widely available to researchers.<9> All of these lines are potentially contaminated by viruses as a result of being developed with mouse feeder cells. Therefore, they may not be appropriate for human use because of the potential for infection.<10> Addressing this problem, scientists at Johns Hopkins recently announced the discovery of a method for developing uninfected stem cell lines on feeder cells from adult humans.<11> Scientists cannot work with new cell lines developed with this method, however, because President Bush’s policy prohibits the use of lines developed after April 2001.

so in reality there are NO stem cells viable for research

what a lie.

1. Did you hear that dickhea* Bill Frist on TV today?
He went on and on about how "President" Bush FUNDED stem cell research. The implication was the Bush was a leader in promoting stem cell research. Frist has no conscience. None at all. He's picked a good party to be a part of. He fits in well.

3. On the surface stem cell research seems like a good thing....
but ponder this: The world is already overpopulated and growing at a tremendous rate. If we extend the life span of humans to a great extent what will that do to this planet?

5. a minor one, compared to the growing number of
low-per-capita-usage population, the growing per-capita-usage of the high-per-capita-usage population, and the shrinking nonrenewable resources as a consequence

4. There is another problem with existing stem cell lines.
Existing lines, if you were to compare them to a family genealogy would be akin to the familial relation ship with between a man and his great great great great etc etc etc grand child. In fact, the familial relationship would be so tenuous as not to exist at all anymore.
For stem cells to be effective, they must be used very soon after their separation from a human body, be it fetus or adult. That way, the cell still exhibits the same properties it had before extraction.
Current stem cell lines may be quite old in terms of generations. Add to this the changes it has gone thru just to adapt to its new surroundings. This stem cell may be useless for research.
Now, the ruling by Shrub deals with research.,...not necessarily harvesting of the cells. When a new baby is born, the umbilical cord is loaded with such cells. Instead of throwing out the umbilicus, use it for research. This way you get fresh cells and no baby died in order to get them.
