Does anyone have some info on this Mike Moore rumor ?
He was requiring small, indie bookstores to order a
minimum of 1000 books for his signings and that for many of them, he
cancelled last minute or did not show up.

1. Haven't heard about it
But I would think it would be customary for bookstores to order a minimum number of copies of a book (depeneding on the author etc) to have a chance to have the author sign at the store. No big time author is going to sign at a store that just ordered 50 or 100 copies.

Personally, I think Moore should give up signing books in person like that. Too much of a security risk with all the wingnuts in this country.

3. I saw Michael Moore in Minneapolis and trust
me NO bookstore would have had trouble selling 1000 books. Rather than cancel shows he added shows due to the INCREDIBLE demand.

In city after city, including the Twin Cities, Michael did TWO shows in one night and signed books after each show.

4. Not sure what book stores you shop at.
But the ones I usually frequent are probably lucky to have 3,000 books period.

5. Where did you hear the rumor?
If it was from some wingnut, turn the tables and demand proof.

Don't do their work.

I've never heard of it, so to me, it's rumor.

6. Not sure what lable to put on them but there was no desire
to engage them without knowing the correct answer first, if there was one. The security thing was suspected but the use of " many " is what
made it be considered, replying to them that is.

9. could be true, who knows?
the right likes to demonize moore for his sucess. as a populist, they act like he has to be there for everyone and everything or else he's some sort of hypocrite.

as the leading voice of the grasroots, the demands on his time for appearances are probably extraordinary. i think he's done a great job at handling his post-"stupid White Men" explosion in popularity.

don't buy the rightwing attempt to smear him as a sell-out.

10. It depends, the author doesn't really have a say in how many books
get ordered for an event. Usually it will be up to the individual store to gauge by its customer base. Any good bookstore owner/manager will have some idea of how many books will sell at an event based on the demographics. What they can do if they are in a bind is call the publisher and figure out how many other bookstores their size or in locations similar to these order but most of the time the bookstore in question will know this kind of thing.

On top of that, unless you get the books from a very small press, returning them is no problem since one stops are very good about having books returned.

11. Two words for any rumor you "hear"
1)Citation
2)Please

Don't let the bullshit get spewed, demand a citation. If they cite a right wing nutball, tell 'em the source is not credible.

It's as simple as that.

22. Some on DU don't like Moore.
I'm glad this is one of those threads where people are defending him. I don't know if the trolls are sleeping, but there are 1000+ post people who trash Moore at any opportunity. I actually clicked on this thread expecting to see people post links that said that this was true, cause I've seen people post links that say Moore behaved like a prima donna at a booksigning. It's always a booksigning rumor, and my guess why that is is that probably in some putrid little think-tank they realized that the booksignings are one event Mike Moore does that aren't usually on film, so the rumors can't be squelched completely. Does anyone have any non-booksigning rumors? They really need to get some new material.

This is my take. I had pms yesterday and I was a total bitch. I'm better today. I guess it's somebody else's turn today. It's a mistake to take anything on DU personally. Sometimes I think people forget it's a website on the internet. A website. On the internet.

18. Moof, we love you; but since this is DU, you better back this shit up
If you sling this crap out, you better have some sort of substantiation for it. This is the smartest news website there is on the Internet. We don't cotton to "rumors" here, if you haven't noticed. You better have some foundation for what you say or you will be ripped to shreds.

I'm proud to have met and talked with Michael Moore (which is not that hard to do). To my knowledge, he will sign anyone's book who asks him. This sounds like 100% horseshit to me.

going to hang * out to dry. The wingnuts are scared to death of it. Of course they're trying to smear Moore. I wouldn't even listen to it, especially if there's no evidence.;(

something like that never mind doing it. He was already a known name and very popular in independent bookstores.

21. The only thing I can think of for this...
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 10:04 PM by RatTerrier
...is that his appearances likely draw many, many people. Possibly as many as 3000 or more. Therefore, it would be important to have an ample supply of books on hand.

I can see popular authors requiring a minimum order of books, in order to have enough on hand. It sure would suck to run out of books with people still waiting in line.

I'm far from an authority on this, but it does make sense.

Hit 'em with this. It seems logical.

23. I was at the L.A. book signing of "Studpi White Men" in 4/02...
Granted, it was before the book and the movie (Bowling for Columbine) became the phenomenas that they eventually became. However, we were in a mid-sized room on the UCLA campus. He spoke and took answers from the audience. He absolutely could not have been more gracious, funny, charming, down-to-earth, and simply incredibly likeable. When I got my book signed I mentioned to him that I had seen "Roger and Me" three times (once on my own and twice during two different college classes). He was so sweet and thankful. He had a plate of cookies on the table next to him and said:"Anyone that's seen Roger and Me three times deserves a cookie!" and then he gave me a cookie. I love this guy. I think he's a hero. I don't care what others say or think...I consider him a true patriot.
