Sheriff gets armored vehicles

Army donates personnel carriers to departments in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne

Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said his department's new armored personnel carrier is a welcomed crime-fighting tool.
Macomb County's "newest" weapon against crime is 44 years old, weighs a beefy 10 tons, travels only 3 miles on a gallon of gas, sits 10 people uncomfortably and can flatten a house.

And it's a war veteran.

The Sheriff's Department on Monday took delivery of an M113 armored personnel carrier, compliments of the U.S. Army.

"You can't beat this," said smiling Sheriff Mark Hackel as he admired the vehicle. "It didn't cost us a dime."

The armored carriers are touted as front-line equipment for homeland security activities and during disasters.

At a morning ceremony at the U.S. Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center in Warren, Hackel, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard and Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans said the refurbished armored carriers will give deputies significant up-close protection during drug raids and while confronting barricaded gunmen.

4. Link to . . .
. . . the stun gun story::scared:

"Before, it took a laser about the size of two trucks," says Schlie. "Now we can do it with something that fits on a tabletop."

The laser pulse must be very intense, but can be brief. So the makers of the weapons plan to use a UV laser to fire a 5-joule pulse lasting just 0.4 picoseconds - equating to a momentary power of more than 10 million megawatts.

This intense pulse - which is said not to harm the eyes - ionises the air, producing long, thread-like filaments of glowing plasma that can be sustained by repeating the pulse every few milliseconds. This plasma channel is then used to deliver a shock to the victims similar to a Taser's 50,000-volt, 26-watt shock.

12. More bad news. The AMERICAN PEOPLE are Bush Enemies
Whether they know it or not.

These weapons will all be used on We the People...happily, I might add, by our New Sturmtruppen.

5. Well thank goodness.
The local constabulary has finally got a tank. That'll really wow them down at the donut shop. "Hey sarge, can I have the keys to the tank, we're out of crullers".

6. They need these tools.
As our goverment gets more and more repulsive, protests get larger and larger. If law enforcement doesn't have military-grade armor and weapons, they won't be able to kill enough of us fast enough to keep us from rushing them.

10. let's face it........something bigger is coming
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 03:57 AM by Fear
Something is going to popup which could bring a tremendous amount of civil unrest. Which is why they are hauling in these machines.

It's a very scary thought, and more prove that the * administration has got so much to hide from the people.....and also what the concequences could be when this information (more information) would leak out (which they prove here with these types of machines).

It's a starting war on own ground.

11. I don't have a problem with this....
I live in neighboring Washtenaw County...

Cops are getting shot with AK-47/SKS wielding idiots all the time in SE Michigan. Just a couple of weeks ago some idiot kid shot two.

What's the problem with giving law enforcement Vietnam era armored personnel carriers? They aren't armed with anything. They aren't tanks, even hand-held anti-tank weapons shoot right through them; but they do stop bullets.

You'd be hard pressed to find a Western Democratic Country in Europe that hasn't had light armor for its police for the past 20 years.

Cops shouldn't have bullet proof vests either I suppose....and it would be better to export these 30 year old APC's to Zambia

14. correction......since you obviously don't know much about the
Western Democratic countries in Europe.

For the Netherlands: Civilian police officers do NOT carry light armor (only a gun).

16. No M-113 that I ever worked on runs on gas anyway!
And I worked on a bunch of them! Some military engines(packs)are multi fuel engines, but as I recall the M-113s are made to run on diesel and not mo-gas! The M-114s had 283 Chevy gasoline engines, but not the bigger M-113! They are both fun to drive! I've seen the M-113s armed with twin 20mm cannon and the mortar tracks carried some heavier weapons! Most of them I saw at least had a 50 cal. on top!

If that Four Star Cop General puts gasoline in that type of APC in the photo above, it will probably blow up the power pack real quick!
