Playboy: Michael Moore on Howard Dean: "kind of a prick"
Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 08:22 PM by RatTerrier
I read the Playboy interview, and it was very revealing. He covers many issues, and isn't afraid of controversy. This is a very good read.

And Peta Wilson fans will get a nice treat as well.

http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/06-14-2004/0002192888&EDATE=

On meeting Howard Dean: "My wife and I went to meet with Howard Dean with the idea of supporting him. We brought our checkbook. But we weren't in the room with him five minutes when we thought, Geez, this guy is kind of a prick. We didn't write the check."

On the ties between the Bush and Bin Laden families: "If you tell Americans the Bushes have been in business with the Bin Ladens for years, they think you're a lunatic. But then, why would Bush allow a Saudi jet to fly around the country to pick up all the Bin Ladens -- relatives of the number one suspect in a mass killing -- so they could get out of the country the week after 9/11?"

On O'Reilly and Fox News: "They're preaching to the converted. Only 1 million to 2 million people watch Fox News at any given time. Let's not waste our time worrying about something as irrelevant as Fox News. If you have cable, it's a great thing to tune in to for a laugh....O'Reilly is a cartoon. Neil Cavuto is all pompous sincerity. Ann Coulter's trip is an act."

On Republicans "wasting" time trying to impeach Clinton in the 1990's: "Clinton was particularly horrific to them because he represented the guy in high school who got all the babes. It drove them crazy. If you're Newt Gingrich, Dennis Hastert, Trent Lott or any of those guys, you remember well who the Bill Clinton was in your high school. Those guys never got to go out with the cheerleaders. In fact they had to become cheerleaders -- literally
in the cases of Bush and Lott."

26. Yeah, I'm glad MM is "on our side"...
...but him calling someone a "prick" is like me calling someone a "geek". And Dean kind of being "prickish" is why I supported him. That was way back, when you couldn't find many dems with backbones...

2. I started to write something really vile and nasty and then I remembered
that MM likes to piss off everyone.

So, I'll save virtual ink and note that between Dean and Moore, the latter is certainly the prick.

I do love his comments on the Big Dog and the babes-- and why the Hasterts, Delays, Lotts, and Bush's of the world MUST hate him....LOL

13. Why does he feel the need to mention they brought their checkbook?
He didn't have to say anything about it at all. It's an unnecessary little dig at Dean that says his campaign missed out on some big bucks. And it's that type of comment which makes Moore seem like, frankly, "kind of a prick."

16. I will say
Even though I didn't support Dean's candidacy, I did meet him (Shook his hand and spoke briefly) BEFORE he became the huge #1 guy in the summer of 03. From the 20 seconds I had he appeared to be a confident and happy guy surprised at his own success. Very short (I'm 6'3")

My guess is that a guy like Michael expects to be spoken to at great length. He probably thought Dean would talk to him about his movies and ask for his support.... but Dean never did.

14. It's possible that Dean didn't really know who MM was
Dean is kind of square when it comes to pop culture. I remember when the Daily Show had their correspondents out in Iowa Dean didn't even engage them or even know who they were. Given his base and the nature of his campaign he should have been aware of the Daily Show and how could have used it to his advantage, i.e., by being funny....

15. I suspect that Dean WAS a prick to MM

remember, at the time, Dean was ALREADY (a little too prematurely)
running as if he was the Democratic candidate. I'm sure he thought
that Moore would be a little to antagonistic to the center dems and
independents, not to mention the bad publicity from the RW media
that a Moore association and/or endorsement would bring. So he didn't
need Moore, and didn't want Moore to be the "king maker" in the
democratic race... plus I'm sure that the Clinton's were already
pushing Moore toward Clark, even if Clark wasn't announced as a
candidate yet.

So, Dean could afford to be a bit of a prick to Michael, or at least
thought that he could, and maybe SHOULD.

23. Here's the "prick" getting the Tom Paine award. Pic.
"These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman…"
Thomas Paine

"Since the time of Thomas Paine and John Adams, our founders implored that we were not to be the new Rome. We are not to conquer and suppress other nations to submit to our will. We were to inspire them."
Howard Dean, 2003

Darn that "prick."

And why do I suspect the original post used that one quote to get a rise out of us? Hmmmm....mm...

29. I have been saying this since 1998!!!
"Clinton was particularly horrific to them because he represented the guy in high school who got all the babes."

Peel back all of the layers... every damn one of them... and within each and every freeper you will find one of two kinds of people: 1) the wierd kid in school that no one liked... no one picked to be on their team, all the girls either laughed at or went "Ewwwwwww....!!" Guys like this are maladjusted and have a deep seated resentment of those who are accepted and popular. Or, 2) a Kliebold or Harris type of Columbine fame that hated jocks. Every freeper has the inner desire to do what Kliebold and Harris did. The freepers and neocons actually did do what Kliebold and Harris did, except in the form of the impeachment.

Moore's movies are cool and all, but I never saw him as any kind of messiah. I wish he'd stop fudging his facts, too. As for Dean, he was a bit arrogant and wore his entitlement on his sleeve, but I think "prick" is a little much.

42. Ann Coulter....
Before I retired, I worked where Politically Incorrect was delivered daily for air. The prod asst that brought in the tapes was a really nice black guy. One night I asked him why Bill Maher had Ann Coulter on so much and he said Bill and Ann were really good friends and that she was very nice and a lot of fun. He said he even really liked her and when she was on TV is was just an act. If you stop and think about it, she really has no talent, and in order to get the righties to continue to buy her books, she has to act like that. Rush in the same, although I think he really is a genuine prick, but he knows which buttons to push on his listeners and it makes him 10 mil a year; it's all about the money. I would be willing to bet Rush votes for Kerry because his audience is bigger when there's a "librul" in office. Just my thoughts.

48. So MM didn't have a great 1st impression of Dean - so what....
... he's entitled to his opinion...atleast MM is consistent - he speaks his mind and isn't saying what everyone wants him to say. I met Dean twice...1st when he was starting out and no one paid much attention and it was at someone's house in the Bay Area...seemed very nice and was very likeable. Then months later I went to an expensive "fundraising concert" and I had the opportunity to see him again and this time (when he was a little better known and many thought he was a shoo-in for the candicacy) he was impossible to not only talk to (because of the swarms of people), but I felt that when he came over to our table that he was too busy darting around and looking for the next person to shake hands with and I know even though he said "hey, nice to see you again" as he looked in a different direction, that even if he did, it didn't come across very sincere and it was a different man I saw in front of me. But hey, it was a snapshot in time and it could have been easily classified as a "prick" moment had someone just met him the first time or had waited a long time to shake hands with him and seriously talk to him about helping his campaign. Anyway, just my 2 pennies worth...I don't think that there should be much read into Michael Moore's comments....I definitely liked the other parts of his interview and the reference to Clinton being the guy who the "other guys" couldn't stand....

Oh, and I really can't wait to see F 9/11....

From an earlier post.

No slight to Dean was intended with my initial post.

I read the entire interview yesterday. The Dean part was one of the things that really stood out. It kinda took me by surprise, and it deserved to be brought up on DU.

I could have approached it with the 'Israelis should assassinate bin Laden' thing, but I prefer to stay away from I/P stuff here. It just gets too contoversial.

Plus, I'm sick of my threads sinking like a rock to the bottom of the page. Thought this would stimulate some interesting conversation.

All in all, it was a good interview. And, like I said, Peta Wilson fans will have another reason to buy it, but that's another story.
