The Money Changers: I propose the "Hall of Fame Rule"
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 08:47 AM by Richardo
1) No changing the subject portrait on any US currency or coins until the subject has been dead for five years.

2) A subject cannot be considered for placement on US money until his or her Presidential papers have been released to the public.

4) The change must be approved by a 2/3rds majority of both houses of Congress.

5) The change must be approved by 2/3rds of the state legislatures.

1. I love your rule 2
That would sure weed out some recent bullshit.

4. Yep. Since the current guy has stopped release of Reagan's
and his Dad's papers. And is changing the rules (of course! He's a Republican) to where the burden of need to see a paper is now on the researcher, instead of on the Government to show cause why it should withhold certain documents.

It's in John Dean's "Worse than Watergate". Excellent overview of the pathological and illegal secrecy of this administration.

5. Rule 1
Rule 1 would have affected when FDR, JFK and DDE appeared on coins.

6. Yes. But there it is.

I seem to recall that the Kennedy half dollar was issued within a year of his assassination, I think in 1964.

I maintain that there should be a cooling off period of some length - at least a year.

(Or a waiver process like MLB allowed for my avatar. :) Still subject to approval by 2/3rds of Congress and 2/3rds of state legislatures.)

8. 25 years
anybody else remember the orgy of renaming after JFKennedy died? IMHO if a person was important enough for her or his life to have an impact 25 years later he/she deserves it.

Oh, and no renaming things that had already been named in honor of someone.
