Will the draft be reinstated in 2005?

American soldiers report that military officials are using coercion and misinformation both to draw troops and keep them in the service in order to maintain the occupation of Iraq.

In Louisiana, Denver, Chicago and Minneapolis, for example, Army Reserve spokesman Steve Stromvener said, "recruiters used misleading, inaccurate, and intimidating information" in retention efforts, according to the Associated Press.

A recruiter told 22-year-old Bill Curta, just back from nine months in Iraq, that he would be sent back unless he enlisted in the Illinois National Guard, his mother, MariAnn Curta, told the Chicago Tribune.

With an all-volunteer military, promises are a primary lure for keeping troop levels up. The U.S. Army's website offers enlistment bonuses "up to $20,000"; their PaYS (Partnership for Youth Success) program promises "priority consideration by companies ... including Fortune 500 corporations" for post-military employment. "College money" is commonly cited as motivation for joining. Details are absent and the Army's website refers all questions to "your local recruiter."
