I had a horrible thought after spending too much time
Edited on Sun Jun-06-04 03:46 AM by notbush
on DU today. There are some (20% or 80%) of DUer's who have spent today relishing in the death of an American president.
It's been bad enough to scare many.
Our political hopefuls, have been very carefull, and polite in their press releases.
The hate from some on the fringe of the party has reminded me how the election of 1972 was lost.
I remember my parents coming home from our county caucus saying a group of radicals had taken over the party thrown out the old leadership and replaced it with anti-war,anti-american radicals.
Now I was 17 at the time, but I knew right then we had lost alot of moderate, life long democrats...at least in my county.
Throughout the campaign of '72 McGovern tried to sound "reasonable".
As a war vet he had the credentials to do that.
But...his supporters on the left, and I mean far left....made it impossible.
My worry tonight, after reading a days worth of hate and venom,is that JFK will run up against the same wall.
He's not the extremist...some of his supporters are. The media will make sure everyone knows it.
Believe me, I certainly don't want this to happen....but I have a certain uneasy feeling about events of the last day.

2. No worries
The DLC types still have enough of a stranglehold on the party to prevent us scary lefties from embarrassing you moderates.

7. Now, I would not quite say that most DUers
are "happy" with the death of Reagan. I think I'm more typical, in the complete and absolute indifference I feel regarding it.

There's little if anything about Reagan's tenure in government (both as governor and president), that requires respect.

While I find certain posts distasteful (cheering and celebrating over Reagan's death for example), but I don't think people need to lie to themselves in anyway. Just because he's dead, doesn't make his life any better than it was.

But I am most annoyed by all the self-righteous preachy posts about those "horrible" threads.

9. 200,000 Guatemalan Indians
killed because of Ray-gun maladministration policies plus other crimes against humanity. Even in '72 a far-left did not exist in the U$. I know I campaigned for McGovern. You had to be 21 to vote in 68, I voted Humphry after RFK was killed (and god knows RFK was not far-left).
By the way, had Ray-gun not trashed Carter's energy policy, the U$ might not be so dependent on OIL from abroad.

10. Didn't JFK die before Reagan?
That wall doesn't exist for Kennedy since he is part of history now.

15. Sorry but JFK is and always be John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Edited on Sun Jun-06-04 04:44 AM by RC
JFK was killed On November 22, 1963, by an assassin's bullets as his motorcade wound through Dallas, Texas.

google JFK and see what you get. It sure isn't Kerry. So please don't muddy history for those of you that haven't lived long enough to remember when that History was Current events.

The initials JFK were taken 40 years ago and are now retired.

John Kerry is JK. Kerry does not use, nor does he want to be refered to as JFK.

Do a search here at DU...JFK for John Kerry will come up more times than JFK for John F. Kennedy.
Who would think RR died before JFK????? Not Me.
Aren't you kinda getting away from the "point" of the original thread?

17. Well, if you would get your facts straight,
There wouldn't be a problem now would there?

Your DU search is a straw man argument. This thread would come up on that search. And what would that prove?

The general public has never heard of DU any way. So give it a rest kid.

18. Kennedy is generally referred to as JFK
not Kerry. perhaps it's used for Kerry also now, but the other poster is correct.

And this pandering to the centrist moderates is what got us in trouble to begin with. I have always supported Kerry because I think he has the best chance of winning but you know what, he and everyone else had better make sure they don't lose the base by catering to the repug lites.First, we are afraid to be called liberals ,and now people like you are afraid that our posts on Du critical of regan are going to alienate the mods! This is ridculous. We are Dems. We are supposed to dislike Repugs!Andas for those extremists of 1972, I was one and so was John Kerry and we "extremists" stopped the war, while the moderates did nothing and were dead wood. They sat back and watched the country go to hell in a handbasket and those that voted for Nixon got what they deserved!

21. Sorry to burst your bubble
but I am anti-war and consider myself pretty left of most of the Dems I know. I did not dance on Reagan's grave yesterday, in fact, I was one of those saddened by the behaviour here.

Nice try, but the mods don't get to paint the left with the same broad brush the right paints all liberals.
