Bu$h eyes cuts for schools, veterans
"The Bush administration has told officials who oversee federal education, domestic security, veterans and other programs to prepare preliminary 2006 budgets that would cut spending after the presidential election, according to White House documents.

The programs facing reductions - should President Bush be re-elected in November - would also include the National Institutes of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Interior Department.

Many of the targeted programs are widely popular. Cuts could carry a political price for a president who has touted his support for schools, the environment and other domestic initiatives.

A spokesman for the White House Office of Management and Budget said the documents, obtained by The Associated Press, contained routine procedural guidelines so officials could start gathering data about their needs for 2006."

1. I guess this explains why so many will vote for him.
Things are going so well.

3. Veterans Too?
And Rolling Thunder just endorsed Shrub, you gotta love it, veterans joining in to screw other veterans.

Well at least the NEA isn't trying to screw other teachers.

Makes you wonder which group supports its own?

4. Budget meeting coming up at school.
I'm meeting with my admin Friday to "discuss next year's budget." He's invited a couple of teachers to "represent" the teaching staff and help make budget decisions for next year.

This is huge. This particular admin doesn't ever ask for budgetary suggestions. We have no input. If he's asking us in, it's because it's so bad he doesn't want to bear the brunt of the blame for the cuts all by himself. If he includes us, then we helped make the decisions about where the ax will fall.

We haven't seen him in a couple of weeks; meetings all day every day at the D.O. Now this.

I'm applying to some districts out of state; I may not even be here next year. And I'd already decided, if I were to be here, there would be no more "extra duty" hours...paid or unpaid. I've worked 60 hours a week all year. They depend on us to step in and do much of the district administrative work, before and after school programs, etc. in addition to our regular work day. More this year than ever before; our district office has worked with a skeleton crew. And we are a big district. I'm not doing it for them next year; I'm tired of cannibalizing my life to keep the place running.

And this is before the next round of Bush tax cuts.

Five more months before we get to nail the eviction notice on the wall.

5. Yeah. Wish we could have Dennis' plan for public eduation.
It would be so comforting to know that my little guys would get a top-notch education from pre-school through college without any of us having to sell our "extra" organs.

7. Me, too.
Since I can't have that, I'll settle for evicting Bush. It's a good start. Any more cuts, and we'll be serving their lunch, cleaning the restrooms, and answering the phones while we're juggling actual teaching.

6. This month's Mother Jones magazine
covers what Shrubya's cuts are doing to education, hospitals, etc. Picked it up today, it is an excellent edition.

8. oh man,
more cuts in Education.

with his "no child left behind crap" and now he plans cuts.

we are already faced with 5% in each of our 56 buildings

pretty soon our classes will be 40 kids in each room and NO learning will be taking place and all schools will be put on "notice" due to fuckup bush's policy and then his voucher system will take over

I wish he would choke on a pretzel while riding his segway

9. I know - we're being cut to death in Georgia
They've cut paraprofessionals in my districts for all grades but kindergarten. Some schools have lost counselors and assistant principals. I'm moving to 4th grade next year, and have been told to expect 28-30 kids in my homeroom. This year I had 21 in my 5th grade class - so that's a huge increase. For the 2nd year in a row, GA teachers are facing no pay raise (although the state is saying we will get 2% in January - I'll believe that when I see it).
