This is what happens when you don't have time to fact check. But just for the record:
In "sex and Violence," my most recent column, there are a bunch of quotes from different U.S. military spokespeople. All the quotes are accurate but I have just figured out that I am attributing them all to the same guy. Oy!
To set the record straight:
"Bad people have parties too" did indeed come from the mouth of Brigadier General Kimmitt.
The original denials abotu the bombing--nobody has a wedding in the middle of the desert, 2 dozen military age males, etc.-- were first released into the wild by Major General Mattis. In the first draft I managed to conflate these two people into Major General Kimmitt. Argh.
The admission that there might have been "some sort of celebration" going on before the bombing but that the bombing took place after the celebration was over comes from an unnamed "US official" quoted by Reuters.
They're all spouting the same shit, of course, which explains why I forgot it came from three different sources. Still, smack me with a wet fish for not keeping them straight.
Ah well,
