CBS says 5 al qaida members in US
Edited on Tue May-25-04 11:05 PM by aquart
"looking to form a cell."

WTH? Are they five blind mice? Can't they manage a get together?

Oh, and they want to recruit women and non-Muslims. Ladies, prepare to be seduced.

And they could have anything, chemical or biological or just anything do you hear? At the conventions maybe. Yeah, that's the ticket.

This is so all over the map it's just ludicrous.

FIVE men? We know the number but not who or how, post 9/11, they entered this country? And they aren't a cell already? Just, like, sleepers?

I'm disgusted.

28. WHY DOES THE MEDIA PLAY ALONG WITH THIS?
This is so stupid, so obvious, and so blatant -- I mean on the DAY AFTER BUSH's failed speech.

I am just sputtering in absolute disbelief that the media isn't just laughing in their face and saying "surely you can do better than that."

5. guess it's time to invade america...she's harboring terrorists.
you can't know there's exactly "5" and not know who they are...

now you could say there are probably terrorists and not know the number..but to declare there are 5?...you know...and if you know and don't pick them up..you're harboring..and if you're harboring terrorists then you're aiding and abetting terrorists...probably even teaching them to fly...so, well, in the interest of the global war on terror, America must be invaded to make the world safer.

14. You can
I'm not saying the info is correct, but it's possible. An informant hears something somewhere and passes on the info, or they find records (bank accounts, fake passports, something like that) in a cache of papers somewhere they've raided. There are lots of ways to find out incomplete bits of info.

I know it's popular to think Bush is making everything up, but there is a wolf out there, and just because these liars have screamed about it too many times doesn't mean the wolf won't try to get us.

Put yourself in their shoes. We steal their money, we invade their lands, we slaughter their friends, neighbors, children and parents, we torture them and give only empty symbolism as an apology. Don't you think they'd hate us? Don't you think if your uncle or dad was arrested by an invading force and then delivered dead to your doorstep, or if your house was struck by a bomb and you went into the debris and found part of your nine year old daughter's cheekbone (both actual cases) that you'd do anything to hurt the monsters who did it to you?

It's only a matter of time, and even though Bush lies most of the time about the threat, it will catch up with us, in a big and painful way. Karma, you know.

Edited on Tue May-25-04 11:36 PM by Solly Mack
That so-called intelligence can name a number but have no clue about identity.

If it's a case of so-and-so heard so-and-so tell so-and so...then maybe the statement about "5" should never have been made...as heresy isn't exactly reliable and it's for damn sure not a reason to scare the country.

They use fear to control...which in no way suggests threats aren't real...nor would I ever say it does. But fear as a method of control is to be scorned-otherwise, we become slaves to that fear-mongering.

I fully expect for America to be "attacked" again. I marvel at the many who didn't expect September 11th. Maybe not the exact method, but surely people knew it was just a matter of time. I know I did.

America's policies haven't exactly been met with cheers for quite some time now...and well before my 1964 birth.

Yes, the illegal invasion increased the hate some felt well before said invasion..and primarily due to America's arrogant dismissal of others. Such increased hate does, indeed, increase chances for further attacks...but I'll not bow down before the fear mongering.

22. It's only fear mongering if you're afraid
It can also be a warning, so you can live accordingly.

Look how many people were stunned by 9-11. Unfortunately, perhaps even some of the people who should have been most aware of it. A lot of the reason this was so unexpected to many was because the Republicans kept belittling the warnings Clinton and Gore raised. I don't want to fall into that trap.

Keeping legitimate threats before the public consciousness helps increase vigilance, and might convince cities to be better prepared for rescues, hospital services, etc, in case of an emergency. It might help prevent stunned disbelief on the part of average citizens caught up in a nightmare scenario, which might help everyone.

And on the off chance that this is the one time BushCo is actually right, it might even help prevent an attack.

I don't buy into the fear-mongering, either, but I like to know what's out there. How I react to that knowledge, whether with fear or resolve or preparation, is up to me, not them.

27. It's fear-mongering. It's what Bush Inc does and they do it well.
a legitimate threat alert doesn't need all the hype and constant crayola warnings. legitimate warnings need to be relayed with maximum info and with use of reason and rationality...otherwise, you'll have people wrapping their homes in duct tape and plastic ...

as to the implication of by calling it fear-mongering one must be afraid("It's only fear mongering if you're afraid")..that's just doesn't stand to reason. You don't have to be afraid to recognise the use of fear-mongering as a control method.

Ever taken the terrorists awarness course? I have..it's a joke....but it's chocked full of ...dare I say..fear-mongering. Which does nothing to teach people about the potential of terrorist attacks...or to alert them to certain dangers.

Granted, had this bunch of noodleheads opted to not use fear as a weapon, their warnings might not meet such derision

It wouldn't matter to me if the boy blunder was right once...it would never make up for his use of fear as a bludgeon.

I get daily terror alerts...they put those out in the military...I read them and then I live my life anyway. Cause that's all I can do.

42. You sidestep my points, but no matter
It's not fearmongering to tell someone they should wear a seatbelt. Fear can be used as a tactic, but it's still just good advice.

Bush keeps claiming he didn't do anything about pre-9-11 warnings because he didn't have any specifics. That's the same as what you are saying-- unless we have a time and a place, don't tell anyone. I just don't agree with that, and in fact, I strongly oppose it. If they have info that there MIGHT be an attack sometime, they should put that out and let us decide how to react to it.

44. Nope. Not the same thing I'm saying at all..
Edited on Wed May-26-04 02:03 PM by Solly Mack

September 11 had more warnings and intelligence-the amount of which is constantly being brought to light...and if they had more knowledge and didn't share, then Chucklenuts is guilty of endangering Americans...same as now..if they have more info and don't share, they are guilty of endangering Americans. That's what I was saying...fear isn't a good motivational factor, as constant fear tends to shut people down..education, however, is.

The boy blunder withheld needed info...and then went on to give vague warnings for the next 2 years...and it boggles the mind that people don't see the fear-mongering in what these thugs do. Thats what I was speaking of...the constant nothing warnings.

Avoid crowds.
Summer terror attack.

Those 2 things mean nothing...absolutely nothing. Anyone with a brain stem knows the "possibility" of an attack exist...the only thing that changes is the probability. Said probability being directly influenced by external events and internal events. We already know terrorists exist within America's borders...telling us that is nothing new.

Sure people should be on guard for certain things..the exact same things they should have ALWAYS been on guard for...

If they were simply telling people to be on guard, then maybe it could be compared to the wearing of a seatbelt...however, the two aren't the same at all. Wearing a seat belt is good advice. Being on guard is good advice. Constantly using the fear factor is counter-productive to achieving the goal of keeping people prepared...

The only thing that changed after September 11th was the way the government used the tragedy to further their other goals and aims...
How Americans should live their lives did not change..as they should have always been on guard to dangers within their environment...to include nutcases bent on blowing things up.

I'll not give anyone a pass who walked around with their heads up their asses thinking America was beyond reach for an attack. Anyone paying attention to world events knew it was possible...and highly probable...to include the government as well as the population.

Our government failed to protect us when they could have...they failed on numerous levels. They continue to fail us by spawning fear...people can only do so much...the government must meet it's responsibilities as well.

No one..but no one..is suggesting people should not take precatuions..but they should have ALWAYS taken those precautions. Even more so when we have a government that doesn't give a good god damn if we live or die.

Oh and BTW, CNN just annouced they were going to put names to those "5" terrorists later in the broadcast (seems people were complaining about the "vagueness" of the warning)...making it rather obvious they knew more than just "there are 5 terrorists"...which was my whole point. If they knew of exactly 5...they knew more about those 5 than the very vague "there are 5 ...." Now maybe we can get pictures posted and everyone can be on the look-out for a face, instead of a bunch of peckerwoods looking out for "brown people"...which in this high-strung and racist country, is a very real and very scary concern for many.

Oh wait, my bad...it's 7 photos they are going to RE-release...making those "5", people they have been looking for for a while now.

43. I'm saying
That it's possible they know there are five specific people here planning something. That's all they are saying now. Of course, as I said, it's possible they are lying, as usual, too. But I was responding to someone who said it was not possible to know that there are 5 people without knowing who they are or without having at least spotted them. It is possible. I didn't say it was right.

And yes, there are likely a lot more than five, and I'm sure the gov knows that. But that doesn't mean they can't have specific evidence that five people are in America now plotting something specific without having specifics on anyone else.

Our government is very large. A lot of them hate Bush as much as we do, and a lot of people even in intelligence are trying hard to do their best, and it is just possible that sometimes the stories we hear come from their efforts. Sadly, we can never know which ones.

17. I bet you're right. To be on the safe side
shouldn't we just arrest everyone with brown skin? We could put them all in big camps, like summer camps, for safe keeping, until the threat blows over. Surely any brown skinned person wouldn't mind, since it is for their own safety, unless of course they are terrorists. So if anyone complained about these camps, we would know they were terrorists, and could torture them until they gave us the rest of the terrorists they know about.

It's sad, ugarte. We joke, but the Repubs would do it if they could.

23. This all hurts Bush by illustrating exactly how much more in danger
we are now than before the invasion of Iraq. People hear these threats, then they have to analyze whether they are believable, and in that process, they have to start questioning whether Bush has made us safer or more in danger with his Iraq invasion, and his Taliban games. It would be hard to believe that Bush has made us safer.

Every new threat hurts Bush. An attack kills him.

However, Adnan G. El Shukrijumah has supposedly been in the US since just after 9-11 and the FBI has been issuing alerts for his for at least 2 years. Why suddenly the big deal? Bu$h's poll numbers and all the scandals, plus the fact that Bu$h couldn't possibly win a fair and free election.

Both of the links below are from 2003. Again, the story has more oddities and coincidences, than Shirley Temple had curls.

A ?Really Bad Guy?
FBI Hunts Suspected Al Qaeda Field Commander

March 20 ? The FBI is hunting for a suspected terrorist likened to lead 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta, and ramping up efforts across America to thwart potential terror attacks.

<snip>

El Shukrijumah was born in Saudi Arabia and is thought to be a terror operative on the level of Atta, the lead hijacker in the Sept. 11 attacks, sources said. One source described him as a "real bad guy."

He is described as 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-5, 132 pounds, with a Mediterranean complexion, black hair and black eyes. He occasionally wears a beard.

<snip>

El Shukrijumah planned to return to South Florida in late 2001, but when the FBI interviewed his father at his home in Miramar, Fla., after Sept. 11, 2001, his mother warned him to remain outside the United States, saying she feared he would be arrested if he came back to the country, according to the FBI alert.

http://216.239.53.104/search?q=cache:SHh6BlfbQ6kJ:www.l...

Mar 21, 9:39 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The FBI worked Friday to establish links between a Saudi-born man, suspected of being part of the al-Qaida terror network, and other terror suspects including alleged "dirty bomb" plotter Jose
Padilla.

Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, 27, lived in South Florida at the same time as Padilla, an American being held in a military brig on charges of being an "enemy combatant." Padilla, a former member of a Chicago street gang
and a Muslim convert, is suspected of planning to detonate a "dirty bomb" that would have spewed radiological material into the air.

Senior federal law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Friday the names of both Padilla and El Shukrijumah ? or perhaps one of his half -dozen aliases - surfaced in the intelligence collected after the March 1 capture of senior al-Qaida organizer Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.

<snip>

El Shukrijumah's father, Gulshair Muhammad El Shukrijumah, 73, said Friday from his home in Miramar, Fla., that his son was not a terrorist and did not know Padilla. The elder El Shukrijumah said the FBI has
visited him six or seven times since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and interviewed him Thursday for more than an hour.

The son left home two years ago, according to the father, a Muslim missionary who is spiritual leader in a Miramar mosque. When they last talked five months ago, the son was teaching English in Morocco, El
Shukrijumah said. The younger El Shukrijumah disliked the American
Lifestyle and was offended by women wearing skimpy clothes, but his father insisted that would not translate into his harming Americans.

"He does not hate anyone," the father said. "I always trained my children to hate evil and not evildoers."
