wow--freeper e-mailed me an apology! has turned around!
Way back last February-April, when BushCo invaded Iraq, I was embroiled in a message board that had a lot of freepers and Bush supporters attacking me for my outspoken questioning and criticisms of the invasion. One of them was particularly virulent. Her husband had to serve a month or two over there, early on, so I guess out of loyalty to him she was completely unquestioning, rah-rah "Operation Iraqi Freedom," and very disdainful of any idea that the war wasn't exactly what it appeared to be.

Imagine my surprise when I opened my e-mail this morning to find this:

Subject: You were right...

After enough time has gone by, I have to admit, that the war has proved to do nothing but kill alot of our men, and I ask myself, why are we still there. So I admit I was wrong... and I am sorry. I tried to email you before, but my puter is slowing dying of a failing hard drive, so you may not have gotten it. I was going to log on to the "hilary" board and agree with you, but realized those posts were way back in June. Hope all is well with you . . .
--------------

(she is referring to a little flurry of antiwar bashing at the old board back when Hillary's book was published, when I added a comment)

For the past two or three weeks I have been feeling optimistic that the general population is waking up to what is going on and that BushCo will have a very hard time of it come Election Day (if there is not some MIHOP attack or crisis like that)--this just confirms that feeling!

1. Nice opportunity to be gracious in victory

Cool news--I hope you wrote her back. Might tell her about Col. David Hackworth's site. No harm in making sure the conversion sticks, and she may spread the news to more people of her original persuasion.

2. oh yes, I definitely wrote her back
Actually, she had become more gracious a couple of months ago when somebody from the board downloaded my personal info from the university directory and spammed people from "me"--this actually brought pro- and antiwar people together in trying to figure out who had done it and we were on somewhat good terms, just not mentioning our disagreements. But actually coming out and saying I was right--wow!

This was my response:

Wow. Now I have goose bumps all over my body and tears coming into my eyes.
I don't even know what to say. I feel so SO bad for everybody in the world being led down the garden path by this unspeakably evil administration. They have an agenda and have no respect whatsoever for life or truth. I'm so SO sorry for everybody who trusted them and now are waking up to their sad realities.
---, it took a lot of guts to e-mail me with an apology; I am sorry, myself, for calling people names and being snooty and impatient with people who didn't see through the corruption and lies a long time ago. It must be particularly difficult for you and your husband, being part of the military, and I am SO glad he got in and out in one piece.
There is so much more we don't know about, that may be being planned; I just pray that over the next couple of years the American people will not allow this very corrupt bunch of criminals to get away with any more. Talk it up with your friends; the only way to turn things around is at the level of neighborhoods and communities--the mass media isn't helping all that much to show things the way they really are.
I do so much appreciate your writing and hope you will keep in touch. . . .

too bad I didn't think of Hackworth's site. In the next round I will mention it.

8. Great letter, Ima_sinnic
I wonder what her husbands thoughts are? Did she say? Perhaps in your next email you could find out if he, too, has come to realize we were lied to. I always like to hear how the military reacts to the shrub lies. They are the ones who have had to pay the price. Excellent letter, BTW. :-) Now, I'm off to check out the Hackworth site!

9. I think alot of folks with family in the military are going
through this right now. It all changed with the "bring them on" comment, and the reaction from the feds and the right wing about the 3rd infantry's complaints.

They are seeing that they were used and so many have died and many more will die, and terrorism seems to be more common on the news than before. Thanks for sharing this.

10. Reason to hope
Yes, yes. We must not assume that republicans are the enemy. Bush is the enemy. There are many who identify themselves as republicans who sense that the country is heading in the wrong direction and are willing to consider dem candidates. Two recent examples:

1) I'm working on the campaign of a man running for city council. It's a non-partisan race, but it turns out he's registered republican. He has some very progressive ideas though, and actually showed up at the last Dean meetup.

2) Another republican friend with whom I recently had a discussion about Bush's Clean Skies Act (she WAS for it), e-mailed me tonight to ask where Dean stands on the environment.

The divide exists to serve the parties. We must be embassadors to our fellow Americans. I really believe we have a chance here. People feel let down by Bush. We who know the way can serve as gentle guides.

12. Unfortunately, I'm too riled to be gentle
Maybe I should just say nothing, though that's what they did in Germany 1933 and look what it got 'em.

14. No, No
Don't stay quiet. All I'm suggesting is that a gentle, patient approach (we have fourteen months), especially one on one, may actually work.
