RNC ploy to dump Bush and replace him with McCain?
Democrats.com:

Some of us suspect that many in the GOP are hoping to dump Bush as the party's candidate and put in John McCain, the man most likely to make the best showing. First, they trumped up a pretext for disseminating plenty of McCain info in the news by floating the rumor that McCain might be Kerry's VP choice. Now, there is a high-profile "conflict" between Dennis Hastert, who represents the hardcore rightwing Bush loyalists (a rapidly dwindling group), and McCain the moderate who represents the "better way." The fact that Hastert blustered that McCain wasn't a "real Republican" strongly suggests he suspects that McCain represents a formidable rival to Bush within the GOP itself.

Any thoughts?

1. Well, We Always Said, Anyone But Bush
As the old saying goes, be careful what you ask for. You just might get it!

13. I saw McCain on C-SPAN last night speaking to a group on
the deficits. McCain really tore into Bush about cutting taxes on the rich and running up record deficits. He sure sounded like a candidate
for something. He made a more effective case for us then any of the
Dems have. Lieberman also spoke there, I changed channels at that point.

17. My DH said something rather weird today.
He said that the Republicans were going to draft a new candidate at the convention?

20. Media frenzy
Media frenzy if there was an open GOP convention.

You couldn't buy publicity like that.

I would actually be excited about politics again, as a Democrat.

5. That ain't going to happen.
Let's concentrate on ousting Bush rather than dreaming that the Republican rank-and-file will suddenly redirect, because there isn't a chance in hell that this would happen so late in the running. Not to mention, John McCain is actively campaigning for Bush this time around, so don't kid yourself.

6. McCain/Guiliani could beat Kerry
or at least make Kerry work. If Bush runs it will be a Kerry landslide, assuming a fair election (which is assuming a lot).

7. Oh that would be fun to watch...
It would be a bold and very smart move for the GOP - probably their only chance. Cold day in hell tho' for the Bush cabal to give up the seat of power.

9. Never happen. Shrub hates McCain more than he hates Kerry.
because McCain isn't supposed to be the opposition. The other day someone posted that Frist would be a Shrub replacement. Although I doubt Shrub would ever consider stepping aside, I can see them putting Frist in his place but never McCain.

24. My thoughts...
Edited on Fri May-21-04 11:50 PM by susanna
McCain has always been a formidable politician. Whether I agree with him or not (and most times I don't), he doesn't allow himself to be defined. I appreciate that at a very real level. It could be considered the 'survival of the fittest' gene in 20th/21st century politics.

(On Edit) Disclaimer: the GOP will do what it must to stay in power, but I agree that they'd promote Frist before McCain. Frist is more controllable on EVERY level.

29. I didn't say McCain wouldn't do it, I don't think Pubs would
offer it to him. The extreem RW hate him and look upo hom as a traitor.

I will say this though.....If they were to toss W and put McCain on the ticket, (hate to say it, but) Kerry would lose.

I wasn't talking about what you said specifically...more a stream of consciousness of what I think of McCain. I'm sorry if I was not clearer. :-( Your points are extremely valid, just as I hope mine are. I shouldn't have tagged onto your post without a disclaimer (see my earlier post, I've edited!).

I do apologize. You're right.

15. Zero chance. ZIp, Nada, etc.
They would run Frist or some other stooge. McCain would just draw Roy Moore into the race.

The Republicans REALLY dislike McCain. It's no act.

It was the Fundies who helped Bush in South Carolina to defeat McCain.

One of the Professors from Bob Jones U. was involved.

As long as Cheney has anything to say about it, McC is goin' nowhere.

30. Sad but too true....
I fear "sane" Republicans are going the way of the dinosaur. I know a few of them (yes!, it's true!) but they find themselves pushed to the fringes and belittled in their own party.

We may end up with a new variation of the two party system: The Sane Party and The Insane Party. :(
