First, google "Chinese Overtime." Also known as the "Salary plus Overtime Eligible Compensation Plan," it enables a worker who does a 75 hour week to earn a lower hourly rate of pay than one who does a 55 hour week. We don't do that. (Chinese overtime is so complex that none of the three former Lowe's employees who work for me can properly explain it, and all of them were drawing it.)
Then google "Lowe's overtime class action suit" and you'll get
http://www.bigclassaction.com/class_action/lowes.html and
http://www.lowesclassaction.com/. Home Depot's employees are not currently suing the company.
Then come to Fayetteville and come see me at the store--p-mail me for directions and a phone number. I'll be happy to take you on a tour of Lowe's. I'll show you the lauan-skinned doors and the lauan floor underlayment. (Lauan is a generic term for wood from any of these trees: Almon, Apitong, Bagtikan, Guijo, Mangachapui, Mayapis, Narig, Palosapis, Red Lauan, Tangile, Tiaong, White Lauan, Yacal, Philippine Mahogany, Meranti (P), Pacific Maple. These mahoganies are all listed as "requiring conservation action" and about 75 percent of this stuff was illegally cut from protected forests.) My doors and floor underlayment are Golden Virola, which is grown on tree farms. I'll show you what old-growth studs look like. Two weeks ago I saw some stuff sitting in their 2x4 rack with paper-thin growth rings in it. I don't have those; we used to buy just whatever was cheapest, but we've cleaned up our act considerably. I opened a bunk of Swedish 2x4s this morning that had the winter rings at least a quarter-inch apart.
If you don't like Home Depot, find a good independent lumberyard. Emphasis on the word "good"--some of the stupidest shit I've ever heard come out of the mouth of a lumberman was from a guy working at an independent lumberyard. (He told his customer that an 8-foot-wide staircase off a deck could be constructed with only two stringers, one at each end, if you used 2x12 lumber. An 8-foot-wide leaf spring can be made that way; if you don't want your staircase to launch the cat six feet in the air every time the kids run down it to get to the school bus, put some stringers in the middle of the span.) But stay the hell out of Lowe's. They are not good for you.
