If a man miraculously made it back to the Soviet Union, then the Soviet authorities would imprison him for not escaping. Or not escaping sooner. Or not avoiding capture in the first place, and bringing disgrace on Mother Russia.

Any of our military who get captured had better start praying his captors are more humane than his comrades.
