Underfunded school gets air conditioning in one room for one day FOR BUSH
Supporters cheer Bush
during visit; others question motives
Excerpt:

Brenda Brum, a librarian at Parkersburg South and a former delegate, said Bush's comments fly in the face of the reality teachers, students and parents face every day trying to meet new federal mandates.

"He doesn't think the federal government is responsible for funding local schools," Brum said. "My question then is why are they setting all the rules?"

Brum said that on Thursday one only had to look around the school to see how the expensive No Child Left Behind requirements are affecting students.

"We've got 1,200 students sitting over there in an un-air conditioned auditorium watching this (on television) with fans blowing on them to keep cool," she said. "Here, we've pumped in air conditioning for the President. I resent that. We need to first make sure there's money to provide students with an adequate learning environment

(I was at the protest of this event and several students there confirmed this story to me. Bush had air conditioning brought in to the room for his speech so that he wouldn't have to endure the heat of a typical day in an underfunded school without an air conditioning system)

2. Just like his daddy, he is so out of touch with people in this country
and their needs.

It amazes me daily that this spoon fed, mental midget is our leader. He hasn't worked a hard day in his life. I wonder how many school supplies they could have provided for the cost of pumping cool air in for the idiot? They have no shame.

If anything, it demonstrates with mind-boggling clarity the arrogance and entitlement this President feels, in disregard of the people he's supposed to serve.

7. Especially coupled with the "feet shall not touch the ground" command
When he visited NYC recently, it was a dictate from the Secret Service that his feet were to never touch dirt. As a result, paths were constructed at city expense and other accommodations were made just so his highness' expensive shoes shan't be sullied by the common earth.

This is disgusting. How many programs could be funded if the little creep could just deign to endure some of the discomfit of life?

42. Here major portions of his motorcade route were repaved
Edited on Fri May-14-04 03:06 PM by sinookas
within 4 days before his arrival. His route from the Northwest side to a city center appearance, large portions of it were an interstate, and they announced a few days ahead that 'some' interchanges' would close through there during his visit. Coinciding with those announcements, I noticed big sections of rough pavement on one stretch of interstate just suddenly had huge crews working furiously to repave them !!! It always struck me as odd the way that happened, whiz-bang like that.

It must be some disorder he has. Very starnge. It shows up in so many contexts.

Just a thought. Want to know where to protest when he shows up? Look for the paving crews out of nowhere.

Edited on Fri May-14-04 02:18 PM by mouse7
I can't say a whole lot because I went to school in the South and only saw air conditioning at the then "new" Junior High building that hosted summer school for the whole county. You can learn without AC, but it ain't fun.

However, the nerve of that fake-assed "Texas" wuss who can't handle May in St. Louis.

Edited on Fri May-14-04 02:29 PM by Merlin
Bush also said he was "disgraced" by recent revelations of U.S. soldiers -- including one from West Virginia -- abusing Iraqi prisoners of war. But he reminded his audience that the "actions of a few do not reflect on the fantastic character of the 200,000 men and women" now serving in Iraq.

Last I heard the number was 130,000.

Edited on Fri May-14-04 03:17 PM by senseandsensibility
I have taught in unairconditioned classrooms in a poor school district for twenty years. Teaching is a tough, tough, job! It's hard enought to be engaging, interesting, competent, informed, demanding, and patient, PLUS control twenty or thirty kids.... but when you're in a 100+ degree sauna, it's impossible! This asswipe had air conditioning put in for his lying little dog and pony show about how great Leave No Child Behind is? How long was the widdle wimp actually there? Twenty minutes? He should try actually WORKING in it for hours every day! Wait until I share this around the faculty room. THIS GUY IS BEYOND BELIEF!

48. What really irked me....
...was that the local media mislead the public in their little article about the protest by implying that there were equal amounts of Bush supporters and bush-haters present. In reality there were hundreds of anti-Bush protesters and a very few Bush suporters. All they really had were a bunch of kids under the age of 12 and a guy with a portable PA system that tour guides use. We had the swing states road show and truemajority.org's automopig.

55. At least one school around here had no heat
And since I live in Minneapolis MN, the inner city, it gets cold here. You don't heat a building, the interior temp can get as low as 50 degrees. Too low and pipes burst. What are the teachers doing, using space heaters? Sucks up the electricity and can be a fire hazard. Put one on the same circuit as other appliances and you blow a circuit breaker.

When my furnace died a couple years ago in the middle of winter, I had no heat in my home for a week.

When they said No Child Left Behind, they were talking about the series of novels co-written by Tim LeHaye, not education.

52. yeppers
that was my high school (parkersburg south). like other schools without air-conditioning, we used to have to be in there every day, for several hours, sweating, and just bear it.... it wasn't that bad. and this asshole can't be bothered with warm air for not even an hour? nooooooo, not for der furher....

countless thousands spent on a visit the city couldn't afford as it was.... mebbe the potholes wouldn't have been a problem had they not taken him through the gravel roaded cemetery leading through the back way in so he wouldn't have to be bothered with seeing anyone.

i was protesting as well. it's my neighborhood, and they weren't welcome..... i walked up and walked back, signs in tow. the turnout was incredible, and dwarfed the bush votes at least 3 to 1, and that's with me being generous toward them. and it was incredibly well organized, especially in comparison to what bush's brownshirts came up with.

i, and some neighbors whom i saw as well and was pleasantly surprised by seeing at the little pre-rally rally at de park ("who, are the people in your neighborhood.... in your neighborhood...."), walked up somewhat early separate, and left somewhat early together, what with it being hot as hell an' all..... when i got home, i just sorta said, hey.... i don't feel done yet. so i went back up, drove by, and by the time i got turned back around after having to find a route back around (they had a number of roads blocked, even part of the interstate, for hours, and people with houses along the way were reportedly told to stay inside them as well), the crowd of about 100 stragglers had dispersed..... and there was virtually no one left. i still had my signs with me, so i said **** it, let's get this thing goin' again with a one man show. i stayed for about another 30-45 minutes or so with my "no more electile dysfunction..... kerry 2004" sign for the traffic to see, and just happened to be there when everyone let out of the gym. so they got it too (funny they mentioned brenda brum, she was one of my "thumbs up" folks, and a pretty cool lady i remember from school days). cheers, jeers, and mostly indifference, i got it all, but didn't give a shit 'cause it was *my* neighborhood, and if he wanted to come have a dialogue with the people, fine.... but i was going to have one, too.

didn't know it at the time, but i was getting in all of the live shots for the local station, and thank god they didn't talk to me. my bush voting family was already disappointed enough anyway, and i would've made 'em *really* disappointed at a public objurgation of smirk for everyone to see at 6 :P but the pbs station in athens, ohio did. kinda wish i hadn't, but i did give the lady, who didn't even shake my hand afterward, an interview, for whatever reason. one of the things i mentioned about his visit was it not being short on irony.... it was supposed to be a policy stop regarding no child left behind, but i told 'em all those kids at south got left behind that day, either staying at home or locked in the auditorium..... if it was supposed to be for them, why weren't they invited?

and somethin' else i just thought about that's mebbe interesting to note, i dunno, but thought it kinda funny..... parkersburg south won the state title in football this year..... and seriously, traffic was worse for that in the same area for the returning players than it was thursday when bush visited. i was there for both

check out the wv state forum, there's more in there....

My father is a school teacher, and he's actually quitting because of "No child left behind."

He says it's a ploy to deprive schools of funding while making standards impossibly high with the intent of causing public schools to fail.

It's no different from the "clear skies initiative" or other such crap he says.

I went to one of the best public high schools in the country with George Bush's daughters, and I was very lucky to have that opportunity.

It's upsetting what's going on with our schools.

It'd be a great way to expose the NCLB farce, along with bush's extreme wimpiness, in the context of his huge tax cut giveaways and war subsidies to his corporate bedfellows.
