This Really ticks me off...
Calls for tolerance untenable for some
A belief that other faiths are not legitimate prompts some Christians to support blocking a Muslim speaker
Monday, May 10, 2004
JILL SMITH

The removal of Muslim speaker Shahriar Ahmed from the program of the Mayors' Prayer Breakfast of Washington County spurred a call from many in the county's religious community for religious tolerance.

But for a large group of conservative Christians, tolerance is simply intolerable if it means saying other religions are legitimate paths to God. For them, belief in Jesus as the son of God is the only way to heaven.

Clark Tanner, pastor at Beaverton Christian Church, and millions of other Christians say they believe Muslims and other non-Christians will go to hell after death -- not because they are bad people, but because they have not accepted Jesus as their savior.

Alright, what the hell is wrong with these damned religious bigots? Really, this type of stuff just doesn't bode well for a country like ours, does it?

Sorry, I just came across this story, didn't see it in LBN and its to old for that anyways, so I'm posting it here.

2. Its the "My God can beat up your God" mind-set...
Among other factors, it's what's fueling the Iraq War.

And its a "lose-lose" proposition for both sides, not to mention those of no particular religious conviction...

"The Englightenment"--here today, gone tomorrow...

3. They believe they are right
This is the fundimental core. Sure when there are atheists and scientists to contend with they will team up to beat back the heathens. But when it becomes time to assert which position is right they will turn on each other.

I got to witness this very thing this past weekend at the Theist/Atheist debate. Christian and Muslim pitted against 2 atheists. Because it was hosted by Muslims the Christian gave no hint of any possible difference between his and the Muslims position. In fact he stood up and pronounced Islam to be perfect. For some reason he did not convert. He did not address the challenge that Christianity proclaimed Jesus to be the son of god and Islam demanded the opposite.

4. I'm not surprised at all
I had nuns for 12 years and during the brain-washing years they taught us to look down on ANY person of ANY denomination that was not catholic. All non-catholics were going to burn in hell for eternity, PERIOD!

I became a marine biologist, shunned all religion, and I can't describe how good it felt inside during the transformation from religious bigotry and faith-based thought, to scientific thought, and the realization that there was no such thing as a god, and that I indeed was in charge of my own destiny.

7. religious fundamentalism is a mental illness of the worst kind . . .
whether Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or whatever . . . and there are a hell of a lot of these kooks not only in our voting population, but in our current government . . . for an overview of just how serious this trend has become, see for example:
