The father of slain child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey is running for a seat in Michigan's Legislature.

John Ramsey, who has lived for years under a cloud of suspicion in the death of his daughter, told USA TODAY he is running for the Michigan House of Representatives because his family wants to put its notoriety to work for the public good.

"We've been talking for a number of years about what we are supposed to do with this unique platform we've been given," he said in an interview Monday. "I thought this is how I could really make a difference."

Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., ran for Congress after her husband, Dennis, was killed by a gunman on the Long Island Rail Road in 1993. John Walsh, host of the Fox TV show America's Most Wanted, became active in missing-children cases after the slaying of his son, Adam, in 1981.
