"Plutonium Files" -- Governments Care Zero about Human Rights
On Wednesday, DemocracyNow! interviewed the author of a new book "The Plutonium Files, America's Secret Medical Experiments in the Cold War" about radioactive experiments done by the US government many years ago. If only such cases were examined in detail by high school history & civics classes, maybe our nation would be a different place today.

Particularly disgusting to me was the case of a Tennessee clinic, where 829 pregnant women were served "vitamin cocktails" containing radioactive iron, as part of their regular treatment.

Also the story of Elmer Allen, who, after telling his doctor “I think I've been injected with something, was labelled paranoid schizophrenic -- by the same doctor who was busy providing Elmer's tissue samples to atomic energy scientists in Argon National Lab. Apparently, no one -- family, friends -- believed him; they thought he was just a little crazy.

EILEEN WELSOME: That's correct. That's what the medical records show. So Elmer was not only used in 1947 when he was injected with this radioactive isotope, but he was continued to be used as a guinea pig for the rest of his life.

2. I've always heard story's about how government agencies...
conduct experiments on unsuspecting citizens. Some, may be true, to a degree, but I usually takes these with a grain of salt. Do you have a link to your story?

3. link to DOE Human Radiation Experiments...opened up under Clinton
by Secretary of Energy Hazel O'Leary, who was run out of office shortly thereafter by reTHUGlican criminals (same reTHUGlican group that is hiding reagun's presidential records, and other criminal evidence)...anyhow, at least Hazel got this out....compare to current bush* Secretary of Energy Abrams, who TODAY announced that all nuclear sites are hearby totally cleaned-up and will now be closed to further public scrutiny....

DOE Openness:
Human Radiation Experiments

------------------------------------------------

The Office of Human Radiation Experiments, established in March 1994, leads the Department of Energy's efforts to tell the agency's Cold War story of radiation research using human subjects. We have undertaken an intensive effort to identify and catalog relevant historical documents from DOE's 3.2 million cubic feet of records scattered across the country. Internet access to these resources is a key part of making DOE more open and responsive to the American public.
