1. Oh they're Totalitarian Monsters, allright
"kinder and gentler"

Hitler, Stalin, or any other of the Nush-like Leaders of History would have dragged her out and shot her.

Cheney probably think Helen should be GRATEFUL they haven't done that to her.

4. This is a toloitarian tactic used by bullies
when truthful discourse is seen as a danger . They have an agenda that won't hold up under scrutiny, so no loyal opposition is to be tolerated.

He probably hates her.

11. I hope Helen can
hang in there long enough for the Kerry administration to put her back in the front row. She really needs to be given recognition for being a true American patriot-one of the few media voices to stand up to bush.

15. So do I.
Helen won't be easy on Kerry; she never has been.

But she should not be disrespected the way BushCo has disrespected her.

Another item for my list of UNPRECEDENTED administration actions.

"Helen won't be easy on Kerry; she never has been.

"But she should not be disrespected the way BushCo has disrespected her."

Absolutely. Ms. Thomas doesn't pull any punches, nor should she. Mike McCurry, Clinton's most charming press secretary, used to flirt with Helen Thomas and she with him, but that didn't stop her from making tart observations and posing tough questions.

I do hope Ms. Thomas keeps at it. She's outlasted fools and charlatans and weasels of previous administrations.

14. Yeah, but Thomas has made no secret of her hostility to Bush
I mean My god, regardless of your view, you've at least got to play the game....like Sam Donaldson has done so well. Sam is a liberal through and through.....but by being at least tactful, he has gotten more than his share of questions to presidents of both sides.
Tim Russert, though not a correspondent, also plays the game well without sacrificing his liberal principles. The result? He gets all the A-list interviews.

20. Please pay attention.
Helen has been tough to every president since joining the press corp.

She built her reputation on asking the tough question of Democrats and Republicans.

Bush is afraid of the tough questions, as he demonstrates OVER and OVER again.

Donaldson is a worthless lap dog. We don't need any more like him.

Welcome to DU, by the way! :)

21. A journalists job is to hold politicians accountable
not to coddle them.

Bush has shown a great deal more hostility and puerile disrespect to Helen Thomas than she has shown to him.

On the other hand, Bush calls doper Rush Limbaugh a "treasure."

Your posts here are very interesting. I've read them all and they have one thing in common.

Welcome to DU.

33. Not wrong entirely.
"Before joining NBC News, Russert observed firsthand the inner workings of the executive and legislative branches of government as a counselor in the New York Governor’s office in Albany (1983–84) and special counsel in the United States Senate (1977–82)."

36. Reagan was a Democrat when that lined his pockets, higher
pay as an actor's union member.

Then, when he started making more money, he switched to Republican because that lined his pockets better - lower taxes as a fat cat.

Very simply, his ideology was aligned with whichever party would get him, personally, the most money.

31. You haven't been keeping up, have you, uppercrust.
For the love of Mike, there have been at least two decades of relentless moaning and complaining about how mean Sam Donaldson was to Reagan et al. Even a slight familiarity with the press and coverage of the White House for the last quarter-century would have revealed that fact.

38. These guys are neither liberals nor conservatives . . . .
They are mouthpieces for the Conventional Wisdom - - whatever is flying by that day;

1. Gore doesn't know who he is. (Ask Tipper)
2. Bush is a straight shooter. (sigh)
3. Kerry is a flip-flopper (Damn, I though he was a Mass. liberal!)
4. Bush is a steady leader. (Oh, God)

Whatever the meme or the conventional wisdom is (you used to be able to see what Gloria Borger was saying on Washington Week, and you could be sure that was the blah, blah, blah for that week) is what Russert and Donaldson will be saying.

EJ Dionne is a liberal. Richard Cohen is a liberal.

Russert is not. Donaldson is not.

Please compare their bodies of work before you start labeling people.

If I knew how to photoshop, I would put Scotty's head on the body of a Scottish terrier dog (although it would be insulting to all Scottish terriers everywhere). Whenever I see that man up there yapping away, I just bark at the TV. But maybe that's just a symptom of my own mental disturbances.
