The fact is cheif...that there isn't just one picture of this woman engaged in clearly specious behavior with a big grin on her face....there are at least 4 that I am aware of. In other words her behavior was not isolated but consistent. Neither is she doing what she is doing by accident. She didn't accidentally force a man to strip and accidentally put a dog collar on him and accidentally attach a leash to that collar. She didn't accidentally force 7 men to strip and accidentally force them to crawl atop one another. She didn't accidentally make a man masturbate on another's face. She did all of these things and posed for photos in their commission with forethought and intention. Your comparison of her actions to a police officer who accidentally shoots a civilian because a situation is unclear is inane at best.

If you'd like to use such a scenario more accurately let's consider the following. A police officer in a situation that wasn't at all clear poses for a picture, with a big grin on his face, while shooting an innocent citizen in the line of duty. He does this not once but four times. It follows then that said police officer shoots innocent people frequently...and he does so gleefully. Is this officer a victim of circumstance? Or is he a vicious killer doing what he does out of wanton and reckless disregard for human life? Can we assume, since he did it four times that it is an isolated incident or his normal modus operandi?

Re: the Stanford Prison experiment, etc.? I'm NOT defending this going on, it's horrible. I think those responsible need to be punished. But P.A. pointed to good evidence that shows that maybe 1/3 of 'normal people' will become, or start to become, brutal when put into a situation like this, given the power. It doesn't make it ok, but I have to say that I'm not really surprised. When people in the US and in the military are told over and over that Iraqis are terrorists, and it is implied that they are responsible for the 9/11 deaths, what do you think is going to happen when you lock a bunch of them up for a year with some US soldiers, many of whom have probably seen friends hurt and/or killed by these same groups of people? It's NOT ok, but I'm not surprised that it's happening. Or that they tried to cover it up. In the middle east, what could possibly be more inflammatory and shameful?

There was also a famous experiment conducted by Stanley Milgram where he used average folks and got almost 65% of them to commit torture upon other people by pushing a button and shocking them for answering a question incorrectly. You can read a little more about it here:

Milgram conducted it to try and figure out how regular Germans could go so far as to treat Jews as sub-humans and eventually go about exterminating them, or not really care if they were exterminated or not. I mean could so many Germans be so totally "evil"? When you are in an environment where there is extreme social and peer pressure to fit in with the unit and to follow orders, you can rationalize away even the more terrible of acts (i.e. if its not them, it would of been me, these are freedom-hating animals who wouldn't hesitate to bomb the U.S., etc.. etc..).

No, what the soldiers in the pictures did is inexcusable, but ultimately in a system like the military where it is drilled into their heads that they need to work as a unit and follow the chain of command, add to that the extremely stressful and dangerous environment they are in, it is easy to lose one's sense of morality.


That is why, ultimately, the superiors - the top of the chain of command - should bear the most responsiblity for this.
